“Screw the consequences, it’s a hundred grand what more do you need to know?!” Adam barked into his cell phone as he hurriedly navigated city streets clogged with morning rush. “Ethics?! Come on man when they hired us they weren’t thinking ethics.” He slowed to a stop at a traffic light glaring at the red light “They hired us to make their troubles go away. We clean up their shit!” He had a tell tale habit of tapping his gold wedding band on his steering wheel when he was impatient. Right now he was feeling very impatient incessantly pecking away. The light couldn’t turn green fast enough. Still preoccupied with his call he stomped on the gas and entered the supposedly empty intersection.
“Next you’re going to tell me it’s immoral…hahaha…” his chuckle was cut short by a speeding motorist making a last ditch effort to “beat the light”. The front side of his car was torn away and flung several feet. Spinning out of control it was only the friction between screeching tires and black hot asphalt that brought the carnage to a halt. Dizzied and confused he stumbled out of the twisted wreck; cars screeching to a halt all around him. Looking down he saw his silk suit had turned crimson.
Determined to get the moron who did this he made his way over to the other car. It too had sustained heavy damage and was in a crumpled heap by the side of the road. People crowded around and had managed to pull the driver out. She sat by the curb cut up and dazed. Not caring to wait for the authorities Adam lunged forward and grabbed a hold of the driver. “What the hell is the matter with you bitch!”
Looking haggard and weak the young lady looked up “I am the angel of death I have come for your soul.”
“You nearly killed me back there, that’s a felony!” he tightened his grip specks of white spit flew from his mouth
Again the young lady said “I am the angel of death I was created for the express purpose of taking your soul.”
“Make sense!” he yelled
“I am the angel of death I was created for the express purpose of taking your soul. After which I will cease to exist.” She replied in an almost ethereal tone
“I’ll bury you…get me? Bury you!” he let go in disgust “I already have a solid case against you. Strung up junkie smashes into lawyer’s car.” He said with indignation “That’s right bitch I am a lawyer. I got connections in places you can only imagine. I can make your life a living hell.” He sneered “And don’t think I won’t do it. I’ve separated mothers from their children and had them throw away the key on the flimsiest of evidence. So you better believe I can put you away for a good long time.”
Just for a second the driver went slack. The query was sent and a reply received all that was left was too morph. “like you put me away…huh Chico?” Adam was startled by the sudden transition.
“Wha…wha..what?”
“Don’t act dumb amigo, you know me” the convicted man gestured with his hands “I admitted to running guns, papi. There was no denying that. But you!” he pointed forcefully “And I. Knew who raped and murdered that girl. But you!” he gestured again “Picked me. To take the blame.” He shrugged his shoulders “So that you’re boy could go free.” He laughed at the irony “They gave me the chair, pendejo!”
“Then…then…how are you here?” he stammered
“Didn’t you hear? I’ve come to take your soul.”
“My…my soul? But I am not dead.”
“Tu esta loco!” The convict laughed with demonic pleasure “Mira! Mira!” he pointed towards the car wreck. The injured man turned to look, afraid of what he might find. He saw his inert body laying lifeless in the wrecked car. The horrifying truth dawned on him.
“oh god!” he sobbed
“Too late Dios can’t help you know. You’re coming with me.” And with that he grabbed a hold of Adam.
“No please don’t you can’t do this. I have a wife a kid.”
“And don’t forget the girlfriend you’re having an affair with.” The grizzly felon pulled harder.
The man screamed with pain “Please stop…where are you taking me?”
“Hahaha you’re a prosecutor you know all about courts.” Another tug another cry of pain “I am taking you to stand trial.”
“I am not prepared please give me a chance.”
“You were given chance after chance all throughout your life to do good but you chose evil.” The soul was almost clear of the body but it still clung on. Snagged against muscle fibers and misfiring neurons with each pull unbelievable pain was felt “Fearing no consequences you acted with impunity preying on the weak serving the wicked.” Another pull tore the soul away “Now taste the bitter fruits of your labor!”
