grocery bag) and broke her leg. So, she knew any other attempts could be dangerous. Just as dangerous. Maybe even more so.
As she sewed the different fabrics that would make up her wings, she decided to also sew in some stars. A little bit of moonlight. Some bird feathers (the ones that flew, no chicken feathers allowed!). She even sewed in some clouds and a little bit of sunshine.
"This is the recipe", she talked to herself. "This is how I'll fly. I'll fly very high, with all of my might, to see what it's like to truly fly."
So she put on her wings and ran around the back yard, till she gained enough momentum and speed. She also gained freedom, magic, and dreams. She opened her wings and took to the sky, where she learned what it was like to truly fly.

Run For It
Kiley giggled with her friends in the lunch room. They all sat at the popular table, by the huge windows that overlooked the city of L.A. She flipped her blond hair back and daintily covered her lip-glossed mouth as she laughed. She had been asked out by two guys, on the same night, and she had just come up with the perfect plan to figure out who should be the one to take her on a date.
“Guys, isn’t that kind of mean?” Janet asked.
“It’s not mean”, T’Kandra defended, “What’s mean is for Kiley to be asked out by jerks every weekend.”
“Yeah”, Kiley jumped in, “I just want to make sure they REALLY want to take me out. With no ulterior motives, like getting in my brand new car or gaining popularity.”
“It’s a harmless competition”, T’Kandra said.
“Making guys win a race to get a date? Seems kinda mean to me…” Janet insisted.
“Oh, lighten up”, T’Kandra said, picking at her perfectly manicured nails. “She’s been on enough terrible dates. Let the girl have some fun.”
And when Kiley told the guys what they had to do, she was REALLY having fun.
“A WHAT race?’ Chris asked incredulously.
“Running”, Kiley tried to suppress her smile. “Quarter mile. The winner gets the date.”
“But I asked you first…” Jaden complained.
“Too bad, so sad”, Chris interjected, not wanting to lose his chance just because he asked second.
“We’ll meet down at the track”, Kiley said, ignoring them both, “8am, Friday morning.”
“Can I try?” a voice came from behind Kiley. She turned around to see none other than Quentin, the new kid in school. She looked him up and down. He wasn’t cute, but he wasn’t ugly, either. But he definitely wasn’t cute.
“Sure”, she said, and the two other guys snickered. Chris ran track, and Jaden was a football player. No way this Quentin guy would even have a chance, but why not humor him?
“Friday, 8am, at the track”, Kiley commanded, flipping her hair and turning on her heel. “And don’t be late”, she added with the smile she could no longer hold back.
Kiley’s life of popularity came with responsibilities too. She had to wake up extra early and drive her BMW to school to prepare the fashion club’s activities for the week. She flicked the volume on the steering wheel up and her iPod played even louder. Anything to wake up.
As she drove down the avenue, she saw Quentin running on the sidewalk, sweaty and out of breath. “Weird”, she thought, “I never pictured him as much of an athlete”.
When she arrived at school, she overheard Chris and Jaden talking. She pressed her back against the wall and listened in.
“Kiley is going to be seen with me around these parts”, Chris told Jaden, acting tough.
“Pfft, you serious, man?” Jaden replied. “I play football, and that honey is going to be seen on MY arm.”
Kiley rolled her eyes and headed to class.
The next day, at the same time, she saw Quentin running again while driving to school. On Wednesday morning, he was out there running too.
Thursday morning, after seeing him again, she decided to ask someone about it.
“Hey, what’s up with Quentin?” she asked the gothic girl who sat on the desk next to hers. “Is he trying out for something?”
“Uh, duh”, the girl replied. “He’s been practicing and training all week. He wants to win the race Friday. He talks of nothing but getting to know you and wants to take you out.”
Kiley was surprised. No one had ever done anything like that for her. No one had ever wanted to get to know her that badly.
“You’re REALLY gonna make some guys race for you?” the girl asked in disgust.
“No, not anymore”, Kiley said, smiling, wondering where Quentin would take her on their very first date.
