“And the patient?”
“He vanished.” His memory of the man on the bed resurfaced. “Kind of weird, really.”
She kissed his chest, above his heart. “How so?”
“He howled on the bed like a wolf.” His own howling during their lovemaking came back to him. “Shit. Did those wolves have some kind of weird infection I’ve caught?”
His heart pounded hard against his ribs. Had he caught something the blood tests had missed?
“Ssshh.” She placed her hand on his chest. “They weren’t wolves, not as you think of them, Dr. Olson.”
“Hah.” He closed his eyes. “I’m fairly certain I can tell a wolf when I see one.”
“What you saw, what they were…” She sighed and he opened his eyes to regard her. “Wolf shifters. Werewolves. Lone wolves. Packless bastards who broke our most sacred rule. No one attacks humans. Ever. To do so means death.”
She’d asked him if he thought her crazy. He’d told her he didn’t and even as she spoke words he knew had to be impossible, he still couldn’t doubt her.
“You said ‘we.’” Out of all she said, the ‘we’ seemed the only thing he could focus on at that moment.
“I’m a werewolf.”
Anger surged through his soul. “You were attacked.” He’d hunt down the bastards and kill whoever had harmed her.
“No, my darling.” Her eyes teared and she rubbed her head against his chest. “Unlike you, my wolf is hereditary. My father’s family has always been of shifter blood. On my mother’s side, I’m human.”
“Hybrids are possible?” Why had he asked that? He didn’t really care. The fact that he’d been attacked by a werewolf needed to hold his attention, but the idea seemed to float away every time he tried to hold onto it.
“The werewolf gene always wins.” She shook her head and cradled his cheeks in her hands. “Listen to me. You’re a werewolf now. You lived through the alteration that occurred in your body and now you are one of us. My Alpha, Luke, wants you to come home, to be part of our pack, to let us help you as you adjust.”
Pack? His heart rate picked back up. He liked the sound of it, and the nervous energy he’d long suppressed surged through him. “I don’t know how to be a werewolf.”
“You will.” She stroked his cheeks. “It’ll be like breathing.”
“Let me get all of this straight; there are werewolves. People can either be born one or made one. I’ve now been made. You’re a werewolf. How can no one know?”
“Packs keep all of it under control, keep things secret. The ones who attacked you? They’re dead. My brother and some of the others took care of them. They’ll never hurt anyone again.”
He sat back. “This is a lot to process.” Yet, somehow he remained okay. Her presence kept him settled.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“When you bit me, you made me yours. Forever. We officially…mated.”
Chapter Three
She spoke very fast, hoping if she said everything she had to in a short time he’d still want her when she finished. He’d bit her and he’d not understood what it meant, but they were tied. Forever. But that didn’t mean everything would be as blissful as her siblings’ relationships. Unlike her loved ones, she and Dallas could spend the rest of their lives making each other miserable. He might even hate her.
She’d been so attracted to him. Why hadn’t she understood what that meant before she’d taken him to bed? If she’d thought things out, she would have figured out a way to stop it so he could have made an informed decision. Shit, maybe he’d mated her because she happened to be the first female werewolf he’d met.
“I can smell…something.” He sniffed in the air. “I don’t know how to explain it. I guess maybe it’s a werewolf thing. Jesus, that sounds fucking insane to say aloud.”
He hadn’t remarked on their mating. Maybe that meant he couldn’t even deal with it. “Where are you smelling whatever it is?”
He sniffed the air again and rolled to her. Leaning over he took a good whiff of her hair. “You. It’s coming off you and I think I know what the scent means even though I have no idea how I could know it.”
“Your wolf side doesn’t need to be taught what comes naturally and instinctively to it. It’s not like learning to read. You didn’t have to be taught to blink your eyes as a human, and as a werewolf you won’t need to be instructed in interpreting scents.” She swallowed. “There are much better teachers than me.”
“Then what I smell from you—are nervousness and a great deal of angst.”
She blinked. “Yes. I’m experiencing those things.” She placed her hands on his chest. “We have to deal with a certain amount of discretion with each other because we always know the other wolf’s emotions. Humans too, and then we really can’t say anything.”
“Why are you feeling the way you are?” He put his hands on her shoulders. “Minutes after the most incredible sex of my life?”
“Weren’t you listening? You mated yourself to me. You didn’t even know what it meant when you did. And now you’re stuck.”
He scratched his chin before pulling her against him. “Stuck? How could I even place you and that word in the same sentence?”
“There are lots of wolf shifters. You might have preferred one of them—”
“Cara,” he interrupted. “Do you think there is something wrong with my wolf?”
She shook her head. “No.” By contrast, he smelled like…heaven. “Why would you ask that?”
“Biology.”
She couldn’t follow where the conversation was heading. “What about it?”
“Animals do what they’re going to do. Now, I’m not going to pretend to get all of this—hell, I’m not even sure I’m going to shift into a wolf, this could all be a mistake or something. But if I’m a wolf, then my wolf side knows what it’s doing. I instinctively bit you to mate you because I wanted you.” He leaned over to kiss the tip of her nose. “I still want you.”
His words made her shiver. “You are going to turn into a wolf. I can promise you that.”
“Right now?”
She scented his own anxiety level rising so she burrowed closer against him. “No. In a few days.”
He grinned, an amused glint lighting his eyes. “Then right now I can still fuck you.”
She gave a startled laugh. He never reacted the way she thought he should. What had happened to his human irrationality? Did he ever possess it? Madame Eve had wanted to set them up even before he’d been a wolf. Maybe they simply fit.
“Paging Doctor Olson. Are you listening to anything I’m saying?”
“Every word.” He nibbled on her ear, and her libido—which should have been satisfied—came right back online. Goose bumps traveled up and down her arms.
“Only from a kiss and my body came alive. How do you do that?”
He sniffed against her ear, a long, hard inhale. She knew he was taking her scent deep inside. “Luck.”
Their mouths fused together like they’d been made to be that way. His tongue plowed against her own. Her pussy wept knowing what was coming soon.
He pulled back and took her cheeks in his hands. “Beautiful lady, I think you saved my life.”
“I don’t think it’s that dramatic. I came and told you what had happened to you, that’s all. I didn’t….”
He kissed her again before leaving the bed. Why talk when she could kiss him? “All I want in the world right now is to taste you.”
She stood up, unsure of what to expect next. It took her a second to realize what he meant. By then, he’d dropped to his knees in front of her.
“You’re so full of surprises.”
“Lean against the wall.” She nodded and did as he’d told her. She’d scented his Alpha nature when she first walked into the room. His pupils were dilated; the wolf glowed in his eyes. Spending her life surrounded by Alpha males allowed her the ability to detect them pretty quickly.
“You?
??ll be ordering me around in no time.”
He bit his lower lip. “I don’t want to order you. I want you to believe I’m always right. Not much chance of that though, right? Because my instincts tell me you’re not docile.”
“No, I’m not.”
“Good.” He sniffed the air again. “I’ve spent the last few days trying so hard not to pay attention to my nose. All I want now is to revel in it. You smell like sex, like every scent in the world I’ve ever loved completely rolled into one. I’ve got to get my tongue on you.”
She closed her eyes as his mouth found her pussy. With one stroke of his talented tongue, her knees nearly gave out beneath her.
“Easy there. Lots more to go with this. I want you upright.”
“Not sure I can comply.”
He looked up and raised an eyebrow. “What did you say to me last time? Oh right, yes you can.”
“Damn it.” She had said that to him. “This is payback?”
“The best kind.” He growled. “So keep yourself standing.”
“Okay.”
His tongue swept past her clit again, sucking and caressing her most sensitive spot. She threw her head back against the wall. She’d promised to stay erect but her mind had ceased its ability to concentrate on anything but the way he fucked her with his tongue. Her pussy surged with moisture but her final completion hadn’t hit her yet.
Her body shook.
“That’s it, beautiful. Come for me. I want to taste more of your sweet juices.”
She exploded. Screaming his name, she grabbed his hair, wondering if the world spun or if she did. The universe shattered into a million pieces. Her legs gave out and he caught her before she hit the floor.
“I’ve got you.”
She might have mumbled her thanks, she didn’t know for sure if her mouth might be able to form words.
He rubbed his head against hers. “Thank you for that.”
She touched the side of his face. “I think that should be my line.”
“You gave me a memory I’ll never forget.”
Now seemed as good a time as any to ask him. “Maybe we’ll have more?”
“Seeing as we’re mated, I would imagine so.”
She grinned. “Good answer, Doctor.”
***
Dallas knew she approached before she actually touched him.
“You okay?”
He nodded though his body felt stiff and abused while lethargic at the same time. “Does it get easier than that?”
She nodded and moved against his chest to help him lay down. “Eventually. I could do it from birth so I don’t remember it ever hurting.”
“Up until the point my body shifted, I still held out hope it had all been a mistake.”
Which was why it had shocked him when fur sprouted out of his skin. The rest of the shift had been a blur until he’d wound up there, in some kind of converted warehouse with the rest of the pack. Completely naked.
His tongue lay heavy in his mouth. A group of people were lying down in the middle of the warehouse where they’d gathered. “Do we sleep like puppies? All of us nude?”
“That’s the general idea.”
Weirdly enough, he didn’t mind. “Come here.”
She rubbed up against him. “Get some sleep. You’ll feel better tomorrow.”
He took a deep breath. He’d never get used to the amount of peace she gave him. “I have to tell you something.”
She nodded, yawning. “Go for it.”
“If I’d been given the choice, if someone had come to me and said I could spend the rest of my life not knowing just how good a relationship could be, or I could suffer and become a wolf in order to meet you, I would have done it. I’d have chosen this. I want you to know that.”
“Oh.” Unshed tears filled her eyes. His woman didn’t cry often. “Thank you for making me your mate. For knowing even before you knew why.”
“I’m a smart man, baby. You know I went to medical school.”
She pinched him before the giggle forming in her throat overtook her. It didn’t get any better. Her set up might not have gone as she’d planned, but Madame Eve had matched them perfectly.
