Training

“And that, father MacArthur, is how I learned of my special talents I inherited from my parents.” I took a deep breath after telling this particular story. Telling the story of the first time I ever killed someone was always hard but once I began the retelling, it became easier.
“That is an interesting story, my child. You have quite the imagination,” said Father MacArthur after listening to me tell my tale.
“Father, it isn’t a story. These events actually happened,” I said to him. “I knew that there would be some skepticism on your part so I will leave you with this, there once was a young boy who grew up on the outskirts of Glasgow. He longed to travel the world but he was the son of a sheep herder who would probably never travel beyond his city’s limits. One day the young boy met a man on his way to town. The man told the boy a fantastical tale of adventure that made him long to see the Americas. The man promised to get the boy to America if he promised him one thing. He had to promise to live his life helping and protecting others from themselves. The boy readily agreed with this man’s request. The man said he would return for the boy when he reached his majority. That young man was you father,” I said getting up quietly and leaving the confessional.
Father MacArthur sat there in the confessional for a long time contemplating what the young lady had said. He had never told a soul of how he had come to be in America nor why he chose to become a priest. A seed was planted in him that day that would fester and grow to help Agnes gain her absolution and redemption.
