My Poetry - The Dance
Guinevere
Looking for an explanation,
In the bottom of my glass,
Of why I’m sat here alone,
Burdened with memories of the past,
I once stood high almost a king,
Lord of all that I surveyed,
But threw it all away for you,
No thought to the price we paid,
Trust once given no longer there,
A friend, no more a brother lost,
We who held court at this bar,
Our own modern day Camelot.
Despite the silence I still remember,
Laughter this place now sadly misses,
Friends united in celebration,
Disappeared due to stolen kisses,
I longed for you did you know,
The moment you opened that door,
But I realised that night,
Of us you wanted him more,
And so I stood at his side,
In the church did you mistake my tears?
Maybe but even then I think you knew,
My own modern day Guinevere.
How I fought you must believe me,
Even though I burned inside,
A slave to love’s cruel mistress,
And then I looked into your eyes,
What I saw we knew was wrong,
Should that have made us stop?
Honestly would it have mattered?
That our actions brought down Camelot,
Would we have known the price of treachery,
Would love have lost out to fear?
Would it really have mattered?
I think not my Guinevere.
As I stroked your flame red hair,
Caressed your porcelain skin,
Jealousy burned inside of me,
As I thought of you with him,
Our love nothing more than a dream,
No future for just me and you,
He was always there loving us both,
Yet we broke his heart in two,
I understand why you had to leave,
As I sit here drowning in my tears,
Alone with nothing but memories
Of you my modern day Guinevere.
