Ride With Me (A Quaking Heart Novel - Book One)

Clint inspected Jessie's sweet face as her breathing steadied and became heavier. Small hiccups escaped her parted lips even in sleep, making him grin. The memory of the kiss she gave him earlier slid back into his thoughts. She had shocked him, pulling his head down for that knock-your-socks-off kiss. What he had desperately wanted to do was dump his supplies on the spot, wrap her in his embrace, and take over. The kiss had deepened anyway, awakening him to a side of Jessie he hadn't wanted to explore but now couldn't quite forget.
But it had changed things. Now he would have to figure a way to tell her they couldn't be anything more than friends. Friends. An interesting rumination, considering he didn't have female friends. He nearly laughed aloud. The women in his life were always lovers—never friends.
It was different with Jessie. If he were honest with himself, he wanted more than a friendship with her. But, life had taught him you didn't always get what you wanted. Besides, what she'd want, he didn't want—commitment, marriage.
A log in the campfire burned through and fell with a thump, showering sparks over his boots. Shaking his head, he forced his pondering away from her yet again, and tried to catch a few winks.
Tomorrow was soon enough to set this straight.
