Hidden Magic
*
Joey Myers sat on a park bench, slightly shivering from the cold and from the miracle he had witnessed. The park was empty. The usual swarm of people jogging or walking their dogs were absent because of the mayhem going on around the world. A woman with red hair spotted him ran toward him and waved. Joey stood up and rushed up to meet her.
“Rebecca, thanks for coming,” Joey said nervously.
“Even though I’m rather busy today, you know I always make time for family. What’s up?” Her casual voice sounded different to her television one.
“I saw something today.” Joey shuffled his feet. He didn’t think he was doing the right thing. But it was too late now. If Rebecca thought that he had brought her out here for nothing she would go crazy.
“Something to do with recent events?” Rebecca’s eyes lit up as she talked.
“I don’t know. Could be.”
“Well, spit it out.”
“Do you remember me telling you about my friend Price Delany?”
Rebecca nodded and said, “The burned kid?”
“Yeah, well he isn’t scarred anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“I saw somebody heal him. A girl from my school.”
“Heal him? How?” Rebecca sounded skeptical.
“I don’t know how. It looked like magic.”
“Magic,” Rebecca snorted. “Are you telling me that he has no scars now?”
“Yes.” Joey nodded.
“Will you take me to him?”
“Sure, I guess.” Joey suddenly felt very bad. Like he had just placed a noose around Alexia’s neck. He gulped and followed his eager sister to her car.
