Remember when Kristy took a picture of the three of us after we won second place in the snowman-building contest at the winter festival? I had asked Daddy to have two copies made. And my art project, the morning of the festival, was making picture frames out of cardboard. I had decorated the frames by gluing on sprinkles and foil stars. I had also used holiday stickers. Hannie’s was red, and Nancy’s was blue.
“It is beautiful, Karen,” said Nancy. “It is a great present.”
“I will put it on my desk at home,” said Hannie.
We all smiled at each other with our shiny lips.
Tap, tap. My door opened and Emily Michelle poked her head in.
“Come on in,” I said. “Look! Santa’s elf left some cookies for you.”
My little sister ran in happily. She picked up a cookie. “Cwismas!” she said.
“Merry Christmas Eve, Emily,” I said. “It is going to be a wonderful Christmas.”
