tell me where it is and I’ll let you go—with your report.”
“I really don’t know. It was at the committee of revisions that I first heard of your circus.”
Mr. Crutchfield thumped the table with his fist but hit the edge of the plate of cookies instead. The plate pirouetted across the floor, breaking the cookies into pieces.
“Maybe some domestic treatment will refresh your memory.” He snatched Nick’s report and threw the first two pages into the fireplace. Nick gasped.
“I’ve never met this old woman. Never seen this umbrella, I swear,” he said reaching out for the report, hoping that would stop Mr. Crutchfield from tearing out other pages. Mr. Crutchfield crumpled another page and hurled it in the fire.
“Stop! I’ll find it,” said Nick out of despair.
“Where did you hide it? Where is it?” said Mr. Crutchfield frowning, dangling the report above the flames. Nick was lost. He truly did not know where the humming umbrella could be. As he hesitated too long, Mr. Crutchfield leaped up and screamed at the top of his lungs.
“Remove this monster from my sight. I’ll teach him a lesson.”
Within seconds four domestics had barged into the room, and Nick was being dragged out.
