Nothing but Trouble after Midnight

Later on, Rob and I returned to our table and abided by most of the aforementioned library rules. Well, except for shoe thing because I had to flick off my wedges to rub his calf with my big toe, but other than that, we were being civil patrons of the public library system.

  “Psst.” Rob got my attention. “How much longer?”

  “I dunno. Why?”

  “I don’t want to be a bad influence on you, but I don’t feel like studying anymore.”

  I shut my history text. “And what do you feel like doing?”

  “I don’t know. Maybe we could hang out at my house.” I considered it for a moment, weighing the parental rules. His parents didn’t have any rule against closing the door like mine did, but his bedroom shared a wall with the family room, meaning his parents were often in the next room.

  He read my mind. “Just so you know, my dad’s spending the night at the hospital, and Mom and Ry went to a play tonight.”

  “Well, in that case…”
