you."
"I'm not leaving her."
He shook his head. "I don't think she would like you being in here when I change her clothes."
I jumped to my feet and yanked the gown from his arms. "I'm the only one she would want to do it!"
He frowned. "Logan what has gotten into you?"
"I'm sorry, Aaron. I didn't mean to snap at you but if you would please let me do this..."
He nodded and stepped out of the room, closing the door behind him.
I shoved my hand through my hair. "I'm so sorry Kaitlin… but I promised to love you in sickness and in health." I kissed her cheek.
I reached over to the table next to the bed, turned on the elephant lamp, then reached for the remote to turn off the main light. The room was bathed in a soft glow.
"I know you have no idea what going on but I thought you'd be more comfortable." I whispered.
This wasn't how I expected to see my wife for the first time, but she needed dry clothes and I couldn't let Aaron do it. I reached for the hem of her dress and pulled it up over her hips. Then, shifting her in my arms, I pulled the dress up and over her head freeing her from the wet sandy mess and leaving her with only her under garments on. Her pale skin glowed under the dim lights. I closed my eyes and swallowed hard, barely resisting the urge to pull her in my arms and never let go.
"Kaitlin it wasn't supposed to be like this!"
A knock sounded at the door. "Logan, can I come in?"
"Just a minute." I called over my shoulder.
I pulled the cotton gown over her head and down to cover her, then reached under it and slipped her top and bottoms off.
"You can come in now."
The door squeaked open. "Everything okay in here?"
I rubbed my hands over my face. "Yeah."
He stood next to me at her bedside. "Logan I need to get an IV in her. Why don't you go get changed now? I'll take good care of her while you're gone."
I nodded and strode silently out of the room.

"Aaron it's been three days, why hasn't she woken up yet?"
"She will, Logan. Her vitals are remarkable for what she's been through. We just have to give her time." He said patting my shoulder. "But son, you need to get on with your life. You have things you need to be doing… Your father called looking for you this morning."
I turned to him. "You didn't tell him I was here or about Kaitlin did you?"
"No, I didn't."
"Good" I sighed. "No one can know the truth about her."
"Logan, I think I know that better than anyone! So, unless you want to let everyone in on our little secret, you need to leave." He scolded.
I nodded. "Can you give me a minute alone with her please, Aaron?"
"Sure," he answered and left the room.
I leaned down and kissed her cheek. "I have to leave now, Lenny. Believe me I don't want to, but I promise I will not be far from you… and when you're ready to come back to me, I'll be waiting. You're my life and I love you."
I pressed her lips to mine.
"Please come back to me" I whispered, then strode out of the room.
New Beginnings
Kaitlin
"Kaitlin? Honey, can you hear me?"
I strained, desperately trying to push against darkness that was holding me prisoner.
"Yes – I… I can hear you," I groaned. "Where am I?" I slowly began to push myself up from the bed. Every muscle in my body cried out in protest.
A warm hand pressed lightly against my shoulder. "It's not a good idea for you to get up just yet."
I looked up into the strangers' gentle blue eyes. "Why?"
"You're still very weak. Not to mention you'll pull out your IV, and that needs to stay in a little longer."
I looked down at the tube that ran from my hand and up a shiny pole; at the end of the tube, a bag hung with what appeared to be water inside. There were machines and wires everywhere. I lifted my gown and saw wires stuck to me with little white pads. "Why do I have these all over me? What happened?" I moaned.
The machine next to me began to beep violently.
"Kaitlin, I need you to calm down. Your heart rate and blood pressure are too high."
My heart felt like it was going to explode.
"I need you to look at me, Kaitlin… Can you do that?"
I nodded, straining to focus on the man hovering over me.
