As an officer in the Montugan navy, Oliver received a full military funeral which was held in the High Cathedral. Jason, Renate and Ruan attended the funeral. As Oliver’s friend and his former commanding officer, it fell to Jason to deliver the eulogy. Jason referred back to happier days in their friendship for material he knew would go down well with his sailors. This was not Jason’s first eulogy. However it was the first eulogy he had given which was undertaken mostly out of a sense of duty towards the living. Jason was an accomplished speaker. The eulogy was well balanced, covering all the expected bases. A few laughs, a few tears, and a few memories to which all the sailors could relate. Jason and Renate attended at the wake held by the sailors. Jason received numerous complimentary remarks about the eulogy. It had apparently been a fitting tribute of which Oliver would have been proud. No one noticed that Jason gave the open coffin at the wake a wide berth throughout the evening. Unlike everyone else at the wake, Jason had already said his final goodbye to Oliver - whilst Oliver had still been alive.
