The Arrival - The Madeline Calderon Trilogy: Book 1
Chapter 3
Running toward each other, we enjoy a quick embrace before positioning ourselves back-to-back to ensure maximum coverage. He guards the left and I take the right as we wait in the dark cemetery for them. Tall, bare trees, stand tall in between an array of grave stones. I am grateful for the dark grayness of the sky. It iss dark enough for us to remain hidden without being blinded. The silence between us was deafening, but there were no words, as we both knew what needed to be done. I would freeze the Demons as they approach and he will use his beautiful body, and dangerous strength to take them out. The power and ability flowing through us is unstoppable when fused together. Just as the silence was beginning to be too much, we hear a rustling of leaves coming from the right. His protective instinct swings us around putting him in the immediate line of fire; however, I knew my role must come first. Despite his age, skill, and lineage making him the strongest ally a girl could need, he had to concede and let me perform my task. As the noise came closer I spun us back to the original position and called on the elements. What came out of the woods was not what I expected. He was magnificent in every way, right down to his fitted jeans and t-shirt.
"Mmm the power that emanates from you is enticing, Princess. What do you say you ditch your boyfriend and take a stroll," the Demon with his Adonis-like traits said appealingly.
"The only place you are going is back to whatever crevice of damnation you oozed out of," I reply defiantly.
"You're done," my love said with authority as he releases his grip on my hands and charge the Demon.
"No!" I yell and immediately begin casting the spell that should freeze and weaken our opponent. And just as I repeat the phrases for the third time he starts to laugh. His laughter intensifies making him fall to the ground. "Stop, please, ha ha ha, that tickles, ha ha!"
"What kind of spell did you use, Maddie?" Lance asks with confusion.
"Ha ha ha, she uses a freezing, ha ha ha, spell, uh but that most certainly is not going to work on a being like myself," He said darkly, picking himself up from the ground. "You are powerful my sweet, but you are going to have to dig deeper than that, especially if you are to be Queen."
"Queen? Queen of what?" Just as I prepare to throw another charm at him, a bright, golden light shines blinding each of us. I hold up my arm to block the light to ensure I am not caught off guard and watch as my love disappears. "Lance!" I cry out. In the next moment I wake up in my bed with the warmth of the sunlight shining into my room. Moments later there is a loud knocking on my door, "Maddie are you alright, May I come in?" Amelia urgently asks.
"I'm fine Amelia, it was just a bad dream, and yes you can come in," I say while catching my breath.
"Oh dear you look like you've seen a ghost. Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine. It just felt so real."
"Do you want to tell me about it?" Amelia sat at the edge of my bed waiting to lend an ear. I thought about it for a moment. Although Grams and my father think highly of her I still wasn't sure how close I should get.
"It's okay, I have to get ready for my meeting at school." Deciding its best to learn more, besides her supernatural resume before divulging too much, I rise from bed. Amelia remains seated deciding how much space she should give me. The level of concern radiating from her is appreciated, so I send waves of happiness to her. Thinking this will ease her tension, I grab my towel and walk to the bathroom. Truth was I didn't need my power to sense how much she genuinely cares, I can see it in her eyes. I know she means well, but it will do our relationship well if she waits for me to come to her. I wait by the bathroom entrance to ensure she has left.
Amelia pauses by the door and turns, "Who is Lance?"
"Who?" I ask with confusion.
"You kept yelling for Lance. That's what made me run up here." Looking down to the ground the wheels in my mind start turning. Who was Lance?
"Truth is I don't know," I said.
"Intriguing," Amelia replies with a smirk. "Hmm, alright dear, well breakfast is ready, please hurry or you'll be late for your meeting."
"I will thank you Amelia." I head into my on suite, turn the hot water on, and am mesmerized by the rain-like flow of the water. Entranced I think back to yesterday and my encounter at the airport. Realization hits me as my mental light bulb turns on. The star of my dream was the same man watching me from the airport window. How could that be? I think to myself. Removing my clothes, I step into the shower and enjoy the heat of the water. My thoughts linger on my mystery man.
Ready to face a plethora of new challenges including reacquainting myself with my home town, life as a college student, and a new level of supernatural bad guys, I put the finishing touches on my makeup. The delicious aromas coming from downstairs are intoxicating. I walk out of my room toward the stairs when the feeling that I am being watched comes over me. My initial thought is to ignore it and head toward the food, but my curiosity votes for exploring around. Walking the opposite way I take a moment to gaze again at the photos hanging on the wall.
