“Bond!” she cried with delight and flung herself toward him.
“The very same,” he agreed easily, catching her in his embrace. He kissed her then frowned, his expression turning rueful. There was a doubt in his eyes that she didn’t like. “Although, actually, not the very same.”
“Did you take another mission?” Her thoughts flew like quicksilver as she wondered how long he would stay, and how they could make every moment count.
“I have no powers anymore,” he admitted as if this was a horrible failing.
Percipia was skeptical. “You must still be able to open locks, since you’re here in my apartment. There must be six security checks between here and the gates.”
“Seven,” he corrected then laughed. “That skill wasn’t given to me by the Host. I learned it while I was flesh.” He sobered. “I can’t look into the hearts of mortals anymore and see their merit.” He ran a hand over her shoulder and his voice fell. “And I can’t heal.”
“But you can help me find that shapeshifter,” Percipia said. “And we can work together to improve Incendium’s systems.” She paused. “If you stay.”
His gaze was steady. “Since my quest was completed with your help, the Host allowed me to ask you for a wish. I can stay or I can return to them. I’ve earned the right to regain my wings, but I would rather be here, with you, Percipia. I would like to learn to be a father.” He smiled a little and his eyes darkened. “And I would like to know if I can be a HeartKeeper.”
Percipia’s heart thundered and she was amazed that he could even wonder what she would say in reply. “I’ve missed you,” she confessed. “And I hated that we had no more tomorrows.”
“Maybe we should savor the moment,” he suggested, a wicked glint dawning in his eyes.
“Maybe it’s good that there’s a new lock on the door,” Percipia agreed. “Since my sisters can be too curious.” She raised her lips and kissed him then, welcoming him back with her touch. There was nothing that would have made her happier than his return, and she felt as if everything was perfect.
“Heaven on earth,” he murmured when he finally lifted his head.
Percipia smiled and tugged him toward her bed chamber. “Come here and let’s review what we know about pleasure.”
“Even though tomorrow will come?”
“Even so,” Percipia agreed, then kissed him with such enthusiasm that neither of them said anything for a long while.
