I take the ring from the box and slide it on her ring finger. She wraps her arms around me kisses me with everything she has. “Thank you,” is all she can muster through her tears.
“Alright enough you two.” Holden stands from his chair and grabs his glass of wine, raising it up to the air. “Let’s focus back on my awesome idea.”
“And what was your stupid idea again?” Jess asks tauntingly.
“Getting a tattoo,” Holden answers annoyed.
“You mean you’re going to mark your temple of a body?” I mock Holden’s refusal to ever get a tat before. He always asks Gage and me whether we regret our tats, and while I had one I regretted getting as a teenager covered with a Celtic cross, Gage’s hold profound meaning to him. It’s always been a dichotomy to see Gage in his suit and tie when he’s working the bed and breakfast, or when he’s in his medical coat, and know all of the intricate tats he’s accumulated over the years.
“Yes, he’s going to mark his perfect body, and I want us all to get the same one. Who’s in?” Cam holds her glass up to us.
Kat and I immediately shoot up our glasses in agreement, never ones to be afraid of a little ink. Gage’s glass soon follows. Jess is the only one looking back and forth between us curiously. “Hold up. You guys don’t even know what kind of tattoo he wants. I’m not getting anything stupid.” Jess takes a drink from her glass defiantly.
“GoodFellas.” Holden’s face changes; he pulls Cam close in his arms and kisses her neck. “I could never think of anything that would mean enough to put on my body forever. But that word says it all. It’s a name that’s part of our past, but that will hold us together in the future as our lives get busier with the kids. Each one of you are the most important people in our lives. Every time I see that name, I think of each of you and how special you are to me. I also think of Dave, and he’s not anyone I ever want to forget.”
Cam holds her glass higher. “Hurry up and agree before Holden turns into a total pussy and decides to get my name on his chest too.”
“Never, woman. Didn’t you hear, that’s a kiss of death for a relationship?” Holden says jokingly mimicking Kat’s reaction to my tat, and turns back to Cam so that she has no choice but to kiss him, spilling her wine onto the deck below.
Jess holds up her glass. “Fine. GoodFellas it is. Now stop being gross and let’s drink.”
It’s after midnight when they leave and Kat and I are finally alone. We both fall back onto the bed, fuzzy from alcohol and thankful Helen was having the kids sleep over tonight. Kat rolls over on the bed and rests her head on her hand. Her long auburn curls fall over her emerald eyes. “Did you have fun?”
I lean in and kiss her. “One of the best nights of my life,” I husk out and nip at her lips. “I know how we can make it perfect.”
Kat looks up at me and smiles. “I love you so much, Joey. So much that it still hurts my heart to think of my life without you.”
I roll my body over her, hovering close, our eyes intensely locked on each other. “You are my plaster.” I kiss her softly.
The way I see it, people can choose to live their life free or connected to someone the way I am with Kat. For so long, I thought life had more to offer by not being tied down to any one person for too long. When I met Kat, I realized how much of life I had been missing out on. Before her, it was as if I wasn’t really living; I was just being. Life has so much more to offer when you find someone who you can love with your whole heart and soul to share it with. Kat gave me everything I never knew I wanted. She gave me unconditional love. She gave me a partner to share my life with. She gave me two beautiful kids I love more than my own life. In many ways, she gave me life. She taught me the most important lesson, a lesson I’ll be sure my children always learn.
Love.
Is.
Living.
Ending this book was difficult for me because I’ve grown to love all of these characters so much. When I started writing Dust to Dust a little over a year ago, I never imagined it would have turned into a series that has been so well received. Thank you to all of my readers who have become fans of the A Broken Fairy Tale series, and thank you for continuing to spread the word about my books. Without your support, it would be hard to get an Indie girl like me noticed. You all rock!
I have to thank my amazing family. Without them allowing me the time to hide away and write these words that swim around in my mind, none of this would be possible. To my Hubs, you are my plaster, my rainbows and butterflies, and my heart. Thank you for letting me accomplish my dreams.
A huge thank you to Autumn Hull and Wordsmith Publicity for being the most amazing and supportive women to work with. You are the best of the best and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of your guidance and enthusiasm for the authors you work with. You’ve created a positive community that I’m so proud to be a part of. Thank you so much for taking me on. I look forward to many years together.
Thank you to all of the bloggers and reviewers who have supported me along this crazy journey. Jenn, Dawn, and April, from Read and Share Book Reviews, you rock my world, and your support of all authors is something to be admired. I love you! Shannon Daniels, I love your face. When I was writing this book, all I could think is “Will Shannon like this?” Your love for Joey was an inspiration. Thank you for your friendship. Danielle from Short and Sassy Book Blurbs, you are such a fun and smart woman, I can’t wait to finally meet you and talk books and twins! There are many, many more of you who are such a positive influence on the book world, and I thank you for that.
I also want to thank Faith William for her hard work on editing this book and helping me bring Joey to life. Writing is such a personal thing for me, and I appreciate all of the guidance and support from everyone in this amazing community.
