Of the above titles concerning David Bowie, three deserve special mention. The first is Kevin Cann’s Any Day Now: The London Years 1947– 74, a lusciously detailed and elegantly illustrated day-by-day catalogue of his life and career from birth until Diamond Dogs. The second is Nicholas Pegg’s repeatedly revised The Complete David Bowie which as a thumping great databank of impassioned Bowie analysis, information and trivia is no less biblical a reference. If Cann is Boswell to Bowie’s Johnson then Pegg is Watson to Bowie’s Holmes. Theirs are the paper ministries of Bowiedom to whom all authors staggering blindly down similar corridors will forever owe endless gratitude.
Last but by no means least is Moonage Daydream, David Bowie’s own account of ‘The Life And Times Of Ziggy Stardust’ as he remembers it, published in conjunction with his friend, the legendary stardust lensman Mick Rock.
Beyond the above bibliography, Ziggyology was collated from too many vitamin-sapping hours subsisting on the ventilation system of the British Library, Euston Road and more so the lonesome Orwellian fortress that is the British Newspaper Library, Colindale. To cite every individual source would be to burden this book with an extra hundred pages of needlessly academic quibble-settling footnotes which would dull the lustre of the spirit in which Ziggyology was written. For sake of brevity, the list of periodicals consulted included: Aberdeen Evening Express, Battersea News, The Blackshirt, Brixton Advertiser, Bromley Advertiser, Catford & Lewisham Journal, Croydon Advertiser, Curious, Daily Express, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, Disc & Music Echo, Dundee Courier, Evening News, Evening Standard, Fabulous 208, Fulham Chronicle, Glasgow Evening Times, the Guardian, Hammersmith & Fulham News & Post, Honey, Jackie, Kent and Sussex Courier, Look-In, Melody Maker, Mirabelle, Mojo, New Musical Express, Press And Journal (Aberdeen), Radio Times, Record Mirror, Sounds, The Sun, the Sunday Mirror, The Sunday Times, The Times, TV Times, Uncut, Vanity Fair, Vogue, West London and Hammersmith Gazette, West London Observer and Woman’s Journal. With particular thanks to the period interviews of Ray Fox-Cumming, Henry Edwards, Timothy Ferris, Martin Hayman, Roy Hollingworth, Nick Kent, Pete Lennon, Robert Muesel, Charles Shaar Murray, Sandie Robbie, Lisa Robinson, Mick Rock, Rosalind Russell, Annie Tipton, Andrew Tyler, Cherry Vanilla and Michael Watts.
Prologue heading Arthur C. Clarke quote from the documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures directed by Jan Harlan (Warner Bros, 2001). Epilogue heading ‘songs and trousers’ quote as told to Paul Du Noyer for Mojo magazine, July 2002.
Thanks to Katie Ankers at the BBC Written Archives Centre for her help in accessing the production notes of the July 1972 ‘Starman’ Top Of The Pops broadcast.
A last starry salute must also go to Michael Harvey who between 1996 and 2007 lovingly curated the fan website ‘The Ziggy Stardust Companion’, still accessible at the time of this book’s publication at www.5years.com.
