She let her wings envelop them both, so they were in a cocoon of warmth and light. “Do you know how they make glass?” She didn’t wait for him to answer. “With fire. I might be different, Rycus, but only because I have had the impurities burned out.”
He stepped toward her and settled the necklace over her head. She let him, for she sensed he needed this bit of familiarity about her. When he was ready to handle another shock, she would tell him about his son. He reached out and carefully took her face in his hands. Tipping her head back, she tapped her lips.
A smile broke out across his face. “You’re still you.”
He kissed her, and her wings deepened to garnet.
Nelay was right. Her allegiance with the fairies cost Idara more than they were willing to lose. The fires burned for weeks, and when they finally died, little was left. Those who departed Thanjavar spread out, taking on the century-long task of rebuilding what once was into what would be.
Another temple was built around the charred stone road where Nelay’s wings had left an outline. The melted courtyard where her wings had first appeared was made into a shrine where pilgrims came to see for themselves the palace where the Goddess of Fire was born.
In the clanlands, a few men returned, among them a man named Harrow. He told of a holy woman with fire wings, lightning in her palms. The Clansmen who hadn’t seen the devastation might not have believed him, for his father was a known traitor and his mother a ruined woman. But there were more stories by others—stories of battles in the sky, battles of fire and ice. Of voices in the storms.
Stories of another face in the storm surfaced. Stories from twenty years ago. Of a girl wearing a frozen wedding dress, her wings the color of an aurora. Her name had once been Ilyenna.
The only thing both nations could agree on was that the war had just begun. And the price for winning would be too steep.
A war is brewing between the queens of Winter and Summer. A war that threatens to shatter the lives of two women who are so blinded by bitterness all they can see is hatred. A war that will tear asunder the very fabric of the balance, destroying the entire world in the process.
But there is still hope. For the daughter one of the queens does not share her mothers' hatred. Elice has found love and hope, and she is determined to take it. If she can survive, she stands a chance of healing a rift that threatens to break apart the very fabric of the world.
