eyes. But, she laughed harder and wiped them away as if they were tears of joy.
“That’s the spirit!” I smiled opening the door for her, “Now, get back to work, Cousin! I knew you were lying about the boss letting you leave early”.
We shared a laugh once more as she walked out the door saying that I knew her far too well. Then, she stopped right in front of the door. She turned around to face me once more.
“I’ll miss you, Dee. I’ll never forget you.”
I tried to give her the best smile I managed to pull, “I will never forget you, too, Ellie. Goodbye.”
I closed the door as soon as she turned and started walking down the corridor. I leant against the closed door. I could hear the sound of high heels walking away faster every second. She might be crying at that moment.
I let out a sigh. Someone said that first love never ends happily, for first love will never end. I refused to believe that saying. That was the end of my first love, and I would make sure that it was ended happily. No tears, no regrets. After all, I had decided to let go of my feelings for her a long long time ago. Whatever I felt at the moment was just a residue of unresolved past. With those words we exchanged, I was officially sealed a story from my past away. I even managed to fulfill a promise. I had said goodbye to her before leaving. Forever this time.
I told myself that I had done the right thing. I did not want to ruin anyone’s love life—even the love life of a man I did not know—as much as I did not want anyone to ruin mine. So, I reached the cell phone in my pocket and dialed a number I remembered by heart.
“Hello?” a familiar female voice answered.
“Hello, Dear,” I smiled, “I’ll be home today. It’ll probably take an hour for me to get ready and reach the airport. But, after a two hour flight, I’ll be there with you again. Do you miss me?”
I smiled as I heard an affirmative response. I used to love Ellie. But, the woman waiting for me is the love of my life at the moment and—I hope with all my heart—she will be the one I spend the rest of my life with.
“I miss you, too, Dear. I’ll be home soon.”
