Because she was dead.
I stepped out of the park, glad to be on my side—the West Side—of Manhattan. I fit in less on the Upper East Side than Emma did. I stared back into the park, seeing shadows of people crossing the white grounds. Just a short time ago, Emma was hunted in this park, running, fearing for her life.
“Okay, Emma’s been through a lot. Give her a break, Angelique,” I told myself. “Give her the weekend to be with—”
Sigh! Travesty! “—Brendan.”
I vowed that we would start working on her own witchy ways on Monday—for her and for me. After all, the girl may have turned me into an empath and summoned a spirit without meaning to—who knew what else she could do?

What’s on Brendan & Emma’s iPods?
Brendan and Emma are both devoted music fans—Brendan likes to tease Emma that she’s a musicologist—and they often retreat into their iPods to find solace. Here are just a few of the songs they’ve been addicted to.
“Runaway” Linkin Park
Emma listens to this song back in Keansburg High, when, ostracized by her classmates and friends, she eats alone in the library.
“Sounds of the City” Bouncing Souls The summer before junior year, Brendan often listens to this song, not aware how prophetic is.
“Carousel” Blink-182
When Emma struggles with her attraction to Brendan, she listens to this song on repeat while jogging in Central Park.
“Hurricane” Something Corporate
They’ve never admitted it to each other, but both Brendan and Emma listen to this song after hanging out for the first time at the Met. It captures the thril —and terror—of being on the precipice of fal ing hard for someone.
“Stand Inside Your Love” Smashing Pumpkins After Brendan snubs her at school, Emma plays this while running along the East River—before the lights begin exploding.
“My Life Inside Your Heart” Rise Against Brendan is listening to this song when he walks into the quad and sees Anthony threatening Emma.

“What It Is to Burn” Finch
After visiting his grandfather’s house and reading Robert’s journals, Brendan is in emotional hel , having a hard time reconciling the curse’s inevitable outcome with his pul to Emma.
“Church on Sunday” Green Day
When Emma recuperates at home, Brendan finds himself listening to this song every time he visits her.
“The Adventure” Angels & Airwaves After Emma brings Hadrian’s Medieval Legends to Brendan’s house—
and they realize they’ve broken the curse and this adventure, at least, is over—Brendan put his iPod on shuffle and this song appropriately comes on. Another bit of magic?
