fries?” he called after me. All of his friends laughed. It made me so angry!

So I went and bought him fries.

I know. What was I thinking? The whole time I was standing in line at the snack bar, I was fuming about what a jerk he was, but it never occurred to me not to get him the stupid fries.

Bobby seemed surprised when I showed up with the fries. Too surprised to make any smart remarks. I just glared at him and went to go find my friends.

For a while I thought he had finally gotten a clue because I didn’t see him again until I was leaving. But as I was walking out of the dressing room, he showed up again.

“Hey, Chelsea! Want to go get some ice cream?”

For some reason, I almost said yes right away, but I caught myself at the last moment. “No, thank you,” I said as coldly as I could.

“Ah, come on, babe,” he said, draping an arm around my shoulders. Ew! I tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t let me go. “I wish you would.”

  “Okay,” I said.

  I know. What?

I actually got in his car and let him take me to the ice cream shop over on Main Street. Then I sat there and let him buy me an ice cream cone and listened while he went on and on about wrestling and how he was the best guy on the school team. He even made me feel his muscles. Ew again!

Finally, I finished the stupid ice cream cone and stood up. “Thanks, but I’ve got to go,” I said.

Then I got out of there fast.

I can’t figure out why I did all those things. I really, really don’t like him. Like at all. So, all I can figure is that he put some kind of spell on me. Probably not a love spell because I didn’t ever think I loved him, but maybe a be-nice spell. Anyway, whatever it was, it’s over now. I have had no problem hanging up on him six times so far tonight. I wish he would get the hint and stop calling!

My phone is ringing again. Yep, it’s Bobby. Wish I was magic. I’d do a leave-me-alone spell.

[The following note was added to the entry by Greer Douglas.]

I did some research into Chelsea Lloyd’s family tree. According to the town records and The Annals of the Blessed, Chelsea is the great-great-great granddaughter of a ceasg. According to Scottish folklore, a maighdean na tuinne, or maid of the wave, was a supernatural being who was half woman and half fish—salmon to be exact. When captured, a ceasg was said to grant three wishes. It is my belief that Chelsea is herself a partial ceasg, which would explain why she was compelled to grant three of Bobby’s wishes (burger, fries, and a date) after he grabbed her in the water, but then felt no other need to continue being nice to him. We can only wonder if her lower half will turn into a fish’s tail at some point, although when I passed her in the hall the other day I definitely caught a faint scent of salmon.

On a side note, I should like to point out that Bobby Hogan is really not such a bad guy. He’s kind of self-absorbed and he thinks he’s a lot better looking than he really is, but he’s alright. While I do not believe that he exercised any magical powers over Chelsea on the day in question, I do suspect that he may be some kind of elf. Possibly a brùnaidh, more commonly known as a brownie, which is a small magical creature who was said to do household chores in exchange for gifts of food. I am not entirely certain yet, but am considering offering him a peanut butter sandwich in exchange for cleaning my room. Strictly in the spirit of scientific inquiry, of course.

  About the Author

Aubrey Fredrickson lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with a landlubbing pirate, an amateur train enthusiast, and a baby boy who may just turn out to be a piranha in disguise. When she was quite young, she found something that described the origins of her name. It said that Aubrey meant “ruler of the elves.” Perhaps this explains why she dreams of the Otherworld. She is a full-time stay-at-home mom, a part-time freelance writer, and an in-between-time teller of tales. Not to mention an elf queen, of course.

  About Tales from Seelie High

Tales from Seelie High is a series of short stories based loosely on Celtic folklore. Each story is told from the viewpoint of one of the main characters involved in a struggle between the world of humans and the world of fairies. “New Boy” is the third story in the collection. I generally publish new stories about once a month. The next story will be published sometime at the end of June or the beginning of July. You can watch for more details by visiting my website at aubreyfredricksonauthor.wordpress.com/.

The bonus material included in this ebook—“This Side of the Door – Chelsea Lloyd”—was originally posted on my website. It takes place just after the events of the second story, “Leena and the Giant,” and almost a month before “New Boy.” I will continue to post these mini-stories, as well as other glimpses into the world of Seelie High, from time to time on my website between the publication of the full-length stories.
