“There’s something about summer turning into autumn,” said Tanuki, “that always makes me want to . . . to roll around.” With that, he gave his belly a smack that jiggled his mighty scrotum and lay right down in the dry grass and rolled.

“I know what you mean,” said Kitsune, “though we foxes are not quite so demonstrative. This is the only sort of time men have ever needed to take seriously, you know. The changing of the seasons.” Then, laughing, he dropped down on the ground and joined his friend in a roll.

Could it be, do you suppose, that despite her unfortunate vocabulary, Bootsey was on to something all along?

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

A tip of the hatless hat to my fellow Southeast Asia enthusiast, James Gierman; to my fellow Tanuki fancier, William Crowell; to Zen Maestro Rudolpho (he are what he ain’t); to my “lazy diamond-studded flunky,” Barbara Barker; to my dear agent, Phoebe Larmore (as well as her evil twin, Skippy); to my editor, Danielle Perez, with a carload of chocolate; to my line editor, Danelle McCafferty (who knows which way the geese fly); and finally, to the Godfather himself, my intrepid and ever scintillating longtime publisher, Irwyn Applebaum. Bien joué!
