Page 3 of Incubus

everyone could be tempted away from their preferred gender, after all - but he was confident in his ability to lure him in. It helped that he had three centuries of skill working in his favor. Yes, that tussle on the floor in that filthy, freezing concrete room was just what he’d needed to get back in his game.

As the body of the real Niclas crackled and smoked in the cell, a man with blue eyes, blonde hair, and an insatiable lust for other men walked towards the office of his commanding superior, ready to blend seamlessly into his new life.

  What is an incubus?

The myth of the incubus became widely popular during the reign of the Spanish Inquisition. Incubi and their female counterparts, succubae, were said to be humanoid demons, often with multiple arms, who would seduce unwitting mortals, either in their dreams or with a human guise in the waking world. Sexual deviants and unfaithful spouses would often blame these fiends for their escapades, and beg for exorcism so they could stop - a good way to keep their reputation or life back then. Skilled shape-shifters capable of influencing a mortal’s actions, incubi were said to draw their magical powers from sex, and if a hominid, solid form became obsolete, a quick rut with a random human was all they needed to shift into a new, more effective body (as Niclas found out the hard way).

Note from the author: Homosexual incubi were considered rare, but not unheard of, and I really wanted to put Niclas through some serious mental anguish. I will not center many of the Bestiary Tales on this theme because of its sensitive nature, but I would like to think my audience is mature enough to take my work as it comes - after all, mythology is very rarely a happy or politically correct study.

Allison Graham is a zoology major who lives in the middle of nowhere with a house full of pets and a love of the fantastically unbelievable. A longtime cryptozoology and mythology fan, she started The Bestiary Tales as a way to connect with fans and remind people of the long-forgotten creatures which so many of our ancestors feared, worshipped, or respected.

She loves anime and manga, singing, drawing, costuming, watching elimination-based television shows like Project Runway and Masterchef (she knows nothing about fashion, but fancies herself a pretty good cook), and, of course, studying up in her vast and baffling mythology library.

She would like to point out that anyone curious about her artwork, attempts at poetry, and costumes should visit her DeviantArt - she loves new watchers and friends! Anyone who wishes to talk about the Bestiary Tales, ask about her sources, and even suggest new creatures for upcoming stories is welcome to reach her via Facebook.
