him pleasingly, with thoughts racing through his head. “Where are you from, Ehtan?”

“I don’t quite remember,” said Ehtan. Vohro eyes lowered in sympathy. “I can only remember up to when I was thrown into the dungeons of Corco, along with my sister.”

  “You’ve been to Corco?”

“Yes, and I don’t care to go back,” said Ehtan, saddened, “if only just to find my sister.”

  “So your sister’s still there?”

“She is. We were separated when I was sold off to a traveling merchant. I was taken out of Corco to work the roads of Esterra. One day, my master got drunk and fell unconscious, so I made my escape. And now I’m here with you--because of your horse. But I will go back for my sister one day. I promised her.”

“I see,” said Vohro. “I’m sorry.”

“No worries. My sister was kind to me, not like my parents. She used to always read to me. That’s what I remember the most about her.”

“Well, we’d better get a move on,” said Vohro, as he mounted Dahkar, turning to the boy. “Follow my horse.”

“You’re not going to let me ride?”

“You’ve had plenty of time riding on Dahkar, leaving me with having to chase you through these mountains. Hurry now.”

Vohro motioned for Dahkar to move out, but suddenly caught him by the neck, forcing him to stop.

“What’s the matter?” said Ehtan, wary of his companion’s disposition.

“My eyes see something,” said Vohro, “a shadow where there shouldn’t be.”

And just as he had spoken those words, a blade sang through the air, whiffing across the dawn-lit sky towards the two travelers. Vohro, having the eyes of a hawk, saw the blade coming inches before hitting him and managed to turn his head, avoiding it with ease. Ehtan was not as lucky, putting his arms up to block his face just as the blade cut the top of his left arm. Ehtan screamed in pain!
