About the Author

Edward Hoornaert has been reading science fiction for as long as he can remember. He was born in Chicago and has a B.A. from the University of Chicago. In addition to writing, he is also a musician who once played with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, which plays a key role in mankind’s leap into space … according to this novel, at least. He currently lives in Tucson, Arizona.

  Dedication

To the memory of my parents, Al and Elizabeth, who saw this book’s beginning but not its end.

  Acknowledgements

Unlike a movie, which is a highly collaborative task, writing a novel is solitary. Nonetheless, only a foolish author would claim that other people didn’t play a part in the process. In my case, there is my son Chris, who proofread, and Judi, my wife of more years than I have fingers and toes to count. Rob Sawyer and Emma Bull provided valuable encouragement and advice. Many science fiction authors, from Robert Heinlein and Jack Vance through Connie Willis and Ursula K. Le Guin, provided inspiration. Katie Daniel, Mikki Ross, Frances Lynch, and especially Pamela Keyes did their best to steer me away from my most egregious writing mistakes. John Helfers and Pat Estrada helped this book to see the light of day. To these kinds souls and all the rest whom I haven’t enumerated (you know who you are, I hope), my profound thanks.
