Page 32 of New Year at TAC

Sheep peered over at Vanessa and Rex as they cuddled and kissed. He smiled. This was ideal. Now he no longer had any real competition for the affections of Chelsea. Then he thought of Wal and their little competition they had been happening. Today was the day he would find out for sure, whether it had been worth the effort.

His blood boiled when he saw Wal standing there, laughing and joking with Chelsea, along with Pete.

He straightened his glasses and walked over to join them. ‘Wal, you geek, stop monopolising all Chelsea’s time. Give her a chance to talk with a real m an.’

‘She already is,’ Wal said with contempt.

  ‘Yeah, me.’ Pete smirked.

  ‘Sod off Cook!’ Sheep scowled.

‘Yeah, beat it before I smack you one,’ Wal ordered, but then smiled. ‘Just jokin Cook.’

‘Hey… err Chels,’ Sheep said. ‘Given any more thought to teaching me how to play the clarinet?’

‘What?’ scoffed Pete. ‘Since when were you interested in playing a classical instrument.’

‘Since ages.’ Sheep delivered him an icy glare.

‘You don’t have a musical bone in your body.’

  ‘Whadda you know, ya spaz?’

‘Sheep!’ Chelsea scolded him. ‘Stop being a jerk.’

‘I’m only joking.’ Sheep definitely didn’t want to make himself look bad in front of Chelsea.

‘I hear Wal serenaded you at the musical arts meeting the other day, Chels,’ Pete said.

‘Yeah, that was so sweet. I really didn’t think he was, but then everyone told me he was singing it to me.’

‘That’s not the song he wrote for you.’ Sheep couldn’t resist trying to make his rival look bad. ‘I caught him writing this really crappy song in detention. It had to be the worse love song I’d ever seen in my life. You would have been running for the hills if you’d heard that one.’

‘You wrote me a love song?’ Chelsea stared at Wal with admiration. Sheep did not like that look at all and quickly regretted not keeping his mouth shut.

  ‘Yeah.’ Wal blushed.

  ‘I’d love to see it.’

  ‘I err… I chucked it away.’

  ‘Oh…’

‘It was really bad,’ Sheep reminded her.

‘I don’t care. If it was written for me, I wouldn’t care how bad it is. It’s the thought that counts.’

  ‘That’s right.’ Wal smirked.

Pete chuckled. ‘Sorry, I’m finding this all a little hard to get my head around. Sheep into classical music and Wal writing love songs? This sounds like some kind of really warped dream.’

Chelsea burst into a fit of giggles.

Sheep scowled. ‘Some of us do have some culture in us you know, Cook. Not all of our musical tastes end at Rob Zombie or Marilyn Manson!’

  ‘That’s right!’ Wal glared.

  ‘Right boys, whatever.’

‘Sheep.’ Chelsea smiled. ‘I don’t think I’m going to teach you how to play the clarinet. I don’t think you really want to.’

  ‘Yes, I do!’

  ‘It’s just not you.’

  ‘How do you know?’

  ‘I just know.’

‘Well ok. That’s cool…’ Sheep knew things weren’t going well now and it looked like Wal had created the better impression. He had to take desperate measures. He was going to ask her to the school dance as his date and too bad whether Wal liked it or not. He’d get in first and he was sure, she’d say yes. ‘Chels…’

Wal cut in before he could, ‘Hey Chelsea, seeing as there’s a school dance coming up, you want to be my date?’

‘I was going to ask her!’ Sheep felt like giving him an ear bashing, but he had to control himself, after all Wal had just done what he himself was going to do. They had both intended playing dirty.

‘Too late, bud.’ Wal smirked. ‘I asked first. So how about it Chels, wanna be my date?’

Chelsea gazed at Wal for a few seconds and then replied, ‘No.’

Sheep felt like thrusting his fist in the air and shouting for joy, but held back.

  Wal flinched. ‘No?’

  ‘No, sorry Wal but…’

‘She’s going with me, right Chels?’ Sheep beamed.

  ‘No. Not you either.’

Sheep’s jaw dropped and he felt like his heart had been ripped from his chest. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard. She was rejecting him?

‘I’m sorry guys. You’re both really sweet, but I already have a date for the dance.’

‘Who?’ both Wal and Sheep asked in unison.

‘Dennis O’Grady. He asked me yesterday. You two boys are just too slow.’

‘Dog?’ both of them chimed in again.

Sheep was in a state of disbelief. ‘But Dog can’t even dance!’

‘I know.’ Chelsea giggled. ‘And Sheep, you have no musical aptitude and Wal, you’re not the greatest singer in the world, but it doesn’t matter, does it? At least Dennis isn’t involved in some ridiculous competition to try to win me over. He’s honest about his tastes. He’s not a try hard like you two.’

  ‘A try-hard?’ Sheep blurted. ‘You’re calling me a try-hard?’

‘Sheep, you’re the biggest try-hard in the entire school!’ She giggled.

‘Yeah mate, you are.’ Wal smirked.

  Sheep glared at him.

‘Looks like you bombed out again, Sheep,’ Wal sniggered.

  ‘What about you?’

‘I’m used to bombing out with the hot chicks. I’m just enjoying seeing the humiliation on your face.’ He chuckled hysterically.

Sheep felt a mixture of irritation and humiliation. He gazed around at the amused faces of his four friends as they all had a chuckle at his expense.

Dennis O’Grady? This had to be some kind of sick joke. There was no way he was worthy of the attention of Chelsea Brown, no way at all.

‘You lose, Sheep.’ Wal smirked. ‘I guess you better start getting used to it.’

‘Sorry Sheep,’ Chelsea said, with a twinkle in her eye. ‘Maybe next time? Oh, and by the way can you two both get rid of those ridiculous looking glasses? They make you both look like a couple of geeks!’
