  APPENDIX II

  The Rules of Pastazch

Pastazch is played with a deck of 60 cards and a six-sided die by up to five players. A standard Corvantine deck consists of four suits of 56 numerical cards and four “Imperial” cards. The numerical cards are divided into the following four suits of fourteen cards each—Roses, Swords, Stars and Crowns—each card in the suit possessing an incremental numerical value, for example the One of Roses is worth one point whilst the Fourteen of Crowns is worth fourteen points. If a player’s hand is made up entirely of cards in the same suit, the value of the hand is doubled. The four Imperial cards possess the following values:

  Chamberlain—30 points

  Landgrave—40 points

  Elector—50 points

  Emperor—60 points

At the start of the game the pack is shuffled and each player is dealt one card. At this stage each player must make a bet equal to a previously agreed amount or fold their hand. Each player then rolls the die and is dealt more cards according to the value of the throw, for example a throw of three will earn three cards from the deck. Once the cards are dealt, each player will then either bet or fold. Each player will then roll the die once more and will choose from the following options according to the value of the roll: replacing one or more of the cards in their hand, adding to their hand up to a maximum of seven cards, or sticking with their existing hand. There will be no more rolls of the die for the duration of the game. Therefore the minimum number of cards in a hand is two and the maximum is seven. The first player on the dealer’s left will then bet and each player will then bet in turn, matching or exceeding the previous bet or fold their hand. Betting will continue until the pot reaches a previously agreed maximum value or all available funds have been added to the pot. At this point the remaining players will show their hands and the player with the highest-value hand will take the pot.
