The biblical Samson does not claim to have been prompted to the marriage by a divine motion. He says: ‘Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well’. But the next verse adds: ‘his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines’ (Judges 14. 3–4). 1671 prints ‘mentioned’, but the Errata correct to ‘motioned’.
