“Alex?” Hayley asked, a little nervous. She had deliberately stood well back so that she could not see the corpse. As an angel she had not been so squeamish. But now, like all creatures of mortal flesh and blood, she feared the reminder of what would one day happen to her body.

“This isn’t a human.” Alex said, squinting at the frozen, lifeless face. Its eyelids snapped open but Alexander did not flinch. Two large, milky white eyes stared up at him. “You asked for me,” he said.

The corpse slowly opened what was left of its mouth and let out a thin, loud whine. Constable Sloan retreated back and Hayley looked set to bolt. Yet the angels remained steadfast in their places.

“Who did this to you?” Alex quietly asked.

The large eyes swivelled his direction despite being unable to see. Another thin whine escaped through its cracked and flaking lips. “Marli…” it wheezed, “…is a pawn…he comes for you…”

A violent shiver passed through Hayley then, a primeval, chilling sensation that rocked her to the very core. She retreated to Christopher’s side then, not chancing going to her soul mate when a dead thing lay inches away imparting such frightening words.

Alex stared into those white, emotionless eyes. “Who’s coming?”

The light in its eyes faded and its eyelids began to droop. Alex could feel the last of her life force fading fast. “Who? Who is it?”

Letting out one final, thin, high-pitched whine it muttered, “Gabriel.” Its head fell dead to one side. Alex swallowed hard and looked up to Hayley, looking very much the corpse himself. Words failed him as they failed her.
