Page 2 of The Sins

At 26 years old I found out what happens after death. I know what you’re probably thinking, where am I? At this moment, I am watching my husband flirt with a woman on the balcony of a hotel room. Am I jealous? Definitely not, I feel sorry for the girl. This is definitely not what I imagined to be doing in the afterlife. I did meet my reaper but was given a choice, stay on Earth as a ghost and fight the evil that is my ex-husband or go to heaven. I spent the first few weeks as a ghost perfecting how to moves things and even appear to other people. I was tempted to give up a few times and go to Heaven but the guilt of knowing how many people I could have saved would have eaten me up alive.

“How are you liking New York?” says my ex-husband, David.

“It is very different from Texas but I am enjoying the change. How long have you lived here?” says Karen

“I have lived here for a few years. Did you find a nice place to live in?”

“Yes I did, I love my new place but it is very strange. I keep hearing things and for some reason I keep finding my red heels on the front porch.” Says Karen as David’s eyes slightly widen.

I am trying to warn Karen by moving things and touching her. I knew the red heels would be a nice touch to scared David, while I was alive I also wore red heels to go out which is why I would leave them on the front porch everyday. I was killed because I became suspicious of David and he found out I was plotting against him. I was trying to gain enough evidence to take to the police but unfortunately I was caught, I still don’t know how he found out either. He confronted me one day and when I tried to wit my way out of it he stabbed me with my own red heels. Either she’s gullible or she’s in denial of the obvious.

“Wow, that’s strange indeed. Why don’t I get us some drinks?”

“Sure, I would love some red wine.” Says Karen, foolishly trusting David.

David walks inside and grabs the wine from the dresser inside the hotel room. As he pours the drink’s, I realize he slips something into one of the cups. This is unlike him, he usually goes out on a few dates with them, beds them and then goes in for the kill. Maybe the mention of the red heels made him uneasy. How am I suppose to save her now? I’m just a ghost. I was so focused thinking what to do, I did not realize Karen was also watching David’s movements.

“Here is your drink sweetheart.” Says David.

Karen takes the cup, stares at it while moving it around for a moment and dumps the wine onto the floor. “Oh David, you did not have to drug me. I have been watching you and I know exactly who you are, you’re a killer.”

Does she have a death wish?

David tenses and starts to get up, probably going for the gun under his pillow.

“Now David, calm down, let me tell you why I have been seeing you. I know you killed your wife because she found out you love killing. I believe her spirt has been trying to warn me. Thing is, I don’t need a warning because I wish to join you.” Says Karen.

She’s insane! What does she mean by joining David?

“What do you mean by joining me?” says David, just as confused as me.

“I want to kill alongside you. I know your wife didn’t kill anyone since she was warning me but I can kill with you. I was also the one who left you that little note warning you that your wife knew your secret. You see, I live a few houses down from you but you never saw me because my family never lets me leave the house, they lock me in the basement. I managed to sneak out once and saw you walking around in the dark by the woods behind our houses. When I got closer I saw the body you were taking out of your car. Ever since then I have followed you around when I can.

So much for saving her, she is a female version of David. I need to learn how to take this haunting stuff up a notch, I have a lot of work to do. Before anything I need to do my research on this Karen gal.

I travel to a library that seems closed and get on one of the computers. I google her name and instantly find her, have I ever mentioned how much I love google? I actually find a newspaper article about her. I thought I wouldn’t be able to find anything because supposedly she says she has been locked in a basement by her family. According to the article, she has been locked somewhere by her family but not a basement, a mental asylum. Great now I have to deal with two mentally insane people. Apparently, Karen escaped from the mental asylum which is twenty minutes away from where we are, she escaped two months ago. Karen is said to be a sociopath and was put in the asylum for killing her father. I hit print and gather all the documents I have found on her. Luckily, Karen did tell on me to David but neither her or David have seemed to find where I left all the evidence I have on David.

I travel back to my old house and see the coast is clear, David must still be with Karen. I get a crowbar and pry open one of the floor boards. Beneath the floor board I see all the evidence I have still there. Now it is time to share this evidence with someone. Let’s go find ourselves an intelligent detective shall we?

  The Pursuit

I lean against the tree as I catch my breath from running.

“Jade, we have to keep going. We can’t stop.”

“Do you think their even going to believe us?” I say as I try to catch my breath.

  “Why wouldn’t they?”

“Think about it Jess! What are we going to do? Just run up to the police and say what? Officer, we saw a girl being chocked to death by Rick Sullivan A.K.A the richest and most powerful man. Their going to laugh at us, we have no proof! He will just buy his way out of jail!” I say as I pace back and forth realizing the amount of danger we are in.

I freeze as I hear footsteps.

  “Their coming, run!”

I pant and try to keep my pace behind Jess. The road is nearby. I hear cars passing by.

We’ve been running for what seems like forever but it’s only been a few minutes.

I feel the energy being drained from my body the longer I run.

  I can’t stop! I’m dead if I’m caught.

  Must keep running.

I can feel the hope of surviving leaving me.

“Jade, hurry! I can hear the cars.”

Just as I start to gain momentum, my foot gets caught and I feel an excruciating pain

Jess rushes to me as I scream in pain.

“Your going to be okay Jade! I am not leaving you.”

I almost faint once I look down and see my foot stuck in a bear trap.

Even if he gets me out I can’t walk. I’ll be dead weight; I’d slow him down.

“Damn these hunters!” says Jess as he tries to free me.

I cry as I think of what I have to do. I have no choice.

  I have to save Jess.

  “Jess, stop!”

  “No, I’m getting you out!”

I can hear the stomps of Rick and his men nearby. I’m trapped.

“Jess, leave me! They are too close. Just leave and get help.”

  “If I leave your dead!”

“It doesn’t matter Jess! I love you. Go get the police and make sure this bastard goes to jail.”

We are both crying as he kisses me goodbye and runs.

I wipe my tears, ready to face Rick. I refuse to show weakness in front of him.

“Look what we have here. A nosy kid in a bear trap.” Says Rick as he stands in front of me with a gun pointed at me.

I look at him in disgust.

“Just kill me already. Go ahead.”

I hold my breath and close my eyes waiting for the impact.
