went, it was pretty disappointing. Probably kissing was better if both people were awake to enjoy it. Sitting back up, she watched his face. Nothing happened. She looked at the monitors that showed his heart rate and oxygen levels. Nothing changed.

  Kisses really didn’t break spells.

“I’m sorry, Barry,” she said softly. “I didn’t mean for this to happen to you. I’ll find a way to get you back, though. I promise.”

She stood up. There was a sink on the other side of the room and as she turned to leave, she caught her reflection in the mirror that hung above it. Green eyes, freckled nose, red-gold hair that was starting to look a little frizzy again after everything that had happened that night. And behind her shoulders, two thin gossamer wings shimmered in the dim light. She hadn’t noticed when they had sprouted from her back and torn through the fabric of Caitlin’s shirt, but she remembered now that they always returned with her memories.

Tonight she had wanted to be the girl who got kissed. Instead she was a fairy from the Otherworld, where magic was real. More than that, she was the Lady. She had brought her people through the door into another world to protect them and now everything that she had fought to protect was in danger again. She had to make things right. She had a duty to her people.

It wasn’t what she had wanted, but at least she only saw one reflection in the mirror.
