Page 2 of Snake Bitten

  *****

Marcus had finally fallen asleep. Daniel had to lie next to Marcus in bed until he fell asleep. But Daniel couldn't fall asleep. His mind was congested with so many thoughts that he couldn't focus on one. There were so many emotions that he didn't know how to feel. Relief, fear, happy, disbelief. He was still in denial. He was unable to understand anything that had happened. This happened in movies and bad short stories not real life. This couldn't have been real life.

Daniel began emptying his pants pocket. He'd been so tired that he fell into bed with Marcus without bothering to change clothes.

Where's my wallet? Daniel thought as he searched his pockets. He ran to his jacket hanging up in the hall. He frantically searched the pockets. Nothing.

Oh, God. Oh, God! Daniel couldn't find his wallet. He turned toward the living room and froze. In front of him was a dark figure, a shadow, standing in his home.

Daniel couldn't move, paralyzed with terror, he didn't know what to do. The figure stepped out of the shadow and stood before Daniel. The shadow was monstrous. His arms and chest appeared to be chiseled from stone. His dark skin was covered in black tattoos to the point that no individual tattoo could be seen. His expression was blank, uncaring.

The man's hand moved subtly. There was a loud pop as the leather of Daniel's wallet slapped the hardwood of the hallway. Daniel looked down at his wallet then back at the man.

"Stay away from that side of town." Daniel recognized the deep voice. It was the voice that didn't want to hurt Marcus and Daniel. "Whether Snake makes it or not, and he probably won't, stay away. There are a lot more than four of us and the next time you see one of us we'll have more than pipes and chains, feel me? Everybody is looking for you. And the second they find you, they will kill you and your family. I don't know what your job is like but if you can move out of the city then move. If not buy a gun and learn how to use it. Forget your car, forget your church, forget everything and everyone you know over there. You understand me?"

Daniel nodded. The man backed into the darkness of the house and vanished.

"Thank you." Daniel whispered. No reply, just the sound of his back door sliding open and then sliding closed.

  You Made It! Thank You!

  About the Author

  Emmanuel Obi, Jr.

Born in 1984 and raised in Auburn, Alabama; I now live in Switzerland. How did I end up in Switzerland? That is a very long story and probably worth a book by itself.

I have always loved writing, painting, drawing; any extension of creativity (I have even started to play with film making). I view it all the same; give the viewer or reader something that will invoke emotion. Leave them with an experience. Hopefully I will succeed at that.
