available paper: the reverse of a map he found on his bedside table. Then, with shaking left hand, he transcribed hurriedly the full extent of his tale, not stopping until he had captured every detail.
Finally he finished in the late afternoon, closing with his signature to authenticate; he laid back, wondering when the end would come.
A handful of minutes later, he received his final visit. Kate had been back to see their first guide, at that fateful lake. There were apparently local legends of a mystical formula which gave man the chance to fly with angels. The locals feared it, with good reason Peter thought.
Dr. Peter Russell is recorded as having died two days later, but all it is said that they found was a degraded hollow of a man, like a fruit with its soft centre sucked out. This apparently decayed further on its shipping back home, for all that was left to bury was a sticky red-black ooze.
Some say Peter Russell shed his skin to walk among the stars.
