CHAPTER SIX

Mia slowly lowered her frame into her chair. She was still in shock over what had transpired in Tinley’s office. Slowly but surely, Mia felt like her career was not in vein, and was finally looking up. Mia was itching to call her mother, but she knew she would hardly be impressed until she saw her daughter’s byline and photo. So Mia decided to do what she always did whenever she was excited about something. She dialed her sister and shared the wonderful news about the proposition and promotion waiting for her once the article was complete.

“My sister the man-eater! I knew you could do it.”

“Thank you, I think.” Mia cracked up and removed the phone from her ear. Marlo’s congratulatory squeal caused her ears to ring. Mia had just spent the last twenty minutes sharing her good news regarding the undercover expose.

“We definitely need to meet up at our spot tonight for happy hour to enjoy celebratory drinks and appetizers.” Marlo was referring to Rudy’s Pub on Lee Road their favorite spot.

“Sounds like a plan to me,” Mia agreed and the two confirmed their meeting time.

Once that was settled, Marlo said, “I need you to explain something to me though?”

  “What’s that?”

“How on earth do you make someone fall in love with you? Because I have been trying to get Steve to notice me for months.” Steve Warner was one of Marlo’s faithful customers. And everyday for the past six months, he would come into the Latte Lounge, order the same Vanilla Vanilla latte and blueberry muffin. He and Marlo would flirt, and then he would be on his way.

“There is no proven way you can get someone to fall in love with you. I tried explaining that to Tinley, but she was not trying to hear that, so I appeased her the best way I could think of. Now in your case, I would recommend that you try starting to get to know Steve a little better. Why not ask him what his interests are? If he would like to hang out.”

“I was waiting on him to ask me.” Marlo pouted. “Is that wrong?”

“How long do you plan on waiting?”

The sisters shared a light chuckle.

“I guess you’re right, but I remember Mommy always saying if a man wants you, then he will do everything in his power to be with you and pursue you.”

  “That is very true.”

“What if Steve does not want to make things happen with me?”

“How about you present an opportunity that will allow him to make that happen?”

  “What are you suggesting?”

Just as Mia was about to give her sister some tricks and tips December made her way to her desk.

“Marlo listen, we will finish this conversation tonight over drinks and appetizers, I promise. December just showed up which means it’s time for lunch.”

“Okay cool. Tell her hey and I will see you later.”

  “Okay. See you later.”

“Everything okay with Marlo?” December inquired as she scooped some M&Ms out of Mia’s candy dish.

Mia nodded. “Yeah, she just needed some guy advice.” She quickly grabbed her purse, and phone.

December tried to respond but her mouth was full of candy.

“Ooh girl save that thought until we get to the restaurant.”
