Sian lay under her feather bed and pondered all these things. She went over every detail of her adventure in her mind and tried to fix it there for ever.

  The following morning the sun shone and the world was blanketed with snow. The girl went out into the yard and looked at the white world. Beside the doorstep, clearly visible in the snow were four paw prints from some giant doglike animal and the criss cross pattern left by a giant wicker basket.”

  ‘And did the village return to normal?’ said I from my place on the hearth.

  Great grandmother looked startled. She had forgotten my existence.

  ‘Yes it did. It took a little while. It was as if the people had wakened from a bad dream and couldn’t believe it.’

  ‘And the Grey Man?’

  ‘No one spoke of him again. It was as if a shadow had been chased away’

  ‘The Watchers mamgu?’

  ‘Just tales, my girl, just tales. But I think this one has done the trick. Listen.’

  I did so. All was silent. My great-grandmother got up, went over to the window and pulled the curtain aside. There was a clear sky and a full moon and the world was white. The snow had come at last.
