“Woah, no wonder. It all makes sense now.”

She looked at the clock. It was seven in the morning.

“I'm calling that federal agent now.”

  She picked up the phone.

  “This is Donika Devon.”

“I'm glad you called, Donika. We've been helping Fate Valley Police interrogate the suspect all night. She’s confessed to being a hired assassin for Mr. Shyster. She admitted everything.”

“I knew it! And I know why he's trying to kill me too.”

  “Oh?” he asked.

“Trans-Food Corporation is poisoning the public. I have the proof, too,” she said, suddenly remembering where she’d left the paper that had made her faint that first night, weeks ago. “It’s in my suit jacket pocket! I forgot it there when I passed out. I packed it up, but it needed dry cleaning. I haven’t touched it since I arrived in Fate Valley. I remember everything! I’ll bring it to you right away.”

She threw on her clothes, and she and Grayson went out to her SUV, digging through her plastic boxes.

  “I know it's in here.”

Finally, she found her jacket at the bottom of a box and pulled out a folded-up piece of paper. “This will prove it! This will take down Trans-Food.”

Grayson drove her to the police department. Gripping the paper, she walked inside and sat it on Sheriff Bear’s desk for him and the federal agents to read.

“This will prove that Trans-Food is poisoning people. I'm leaving this with you,” she said. “I trust you will take care of everything.”

Sheriff Bear picked up the papers and read them.

“This should be enough to arrest the CEOs of the food company and your boss, Mr. Shyster,” said the federal agent, picking up his phone.

Donika threw her arms around Grayson’s neck, and he held her close, whispering in her ear.

“You did it. You did it.”

“I couldn't have done it without you,” she said.

  Chapter 31

  Six months later.

Grayson stood in the office of his new factory, staring out at his workers as they produced his Fate Valley blueberry scones and his Fate Valley bear claws. He would soon be sending out his first batch of goodies, made with love in Fate Valley, into the world. Donika stood beside him, holding his hand, her belly rounded with their first cub.

“This is quite an accomplishment,” she said.

  “It certainly is.”

“It just goes to show that if you have a dream, and you believe in yourself, anything is possible.”

They walked out onto the factory floor and greeted the workers who were busily preparing his scones and bear claws for distribution.

“You've created a lot of jobs for the people of Fate Valley,” she said. “You should be proud of yourself.”

“I'm proud of both of us.”

They walked next door to the café where they were greeted by their friends and family. A congratulations banner hung over the counter, and Kitty handed them both a cup of coffee.

“Our hometown boy certainly has made good,” said a reporter from the Fate Valley News. “How does it feel to fulfill your dream?”

“It feels amazing. And I never would've been able to do it without the help of my beautiful and ingenious mate, Donika.”

“Our Donika always was a smart girl. We sure are happy to have you as part of our family, Grayson,” said Grandma Pearl, shoving a bite of cake in her mouth.

Grayson smiled. Pearl had told him that she would only allow him to marry her granddaughter if he gave her a cake at least once a week. Grayson had happily agreed to that condition. He had even made an extra cake specially for Pearl at the wedding.

After the party was over and all the guests had had their fill of sweet treats and coffee, and the factory was closed for the day, Donika and Grayson made their way to their cozy home. Since their intruder, he now remembered to lock the door every night.

Upstairs, Donika opened the door to the nursery and they stepped inside. The crib, the rocking chair, the changing table, and the chest of drawers were all set up for the arrival of their cub. He rubbed her belly as they gazed at the room for their little one.

“I have a surprise for you,” she said. “I got some special news yesterday at the doctor’s.”

“I'm sorry I couldn't make it. There was just so much to do before the grand opening of the factory.”

“That's okay. It means that I can tell you now.”

“What is it?” he asked, growing anxious.

“I know the sex of the baby.”

  “What is it?”

  “It's a girl.”

“We're going to have a baby girl?” he said, knowing that shifter girls were rare.

He sank to his knees and cupped her belly in his hands, kissing her belly button affectionately. She ran her fingers through his hair and patted his head. He stood up and hugged her close.

“You make me the happiest man, Donika. You’ve filled my life with joy and helped my dreams come true.”

“And you've given me a home and a reason for everything. Before I found you, I was lost and alone. I couldn't even relate to my own family. But now, I finally feel like I belong, and I have a place in my hometown.”

“You’ll always have a place with me, right here in my heart.”

She sent him a message through their bond, the memory of when he had helped her discover the things she'd kept hidden deep inside. She’d felt so guilty for helping Mr. Shyster for all those years, that she’d buried it so deep she could never remember.

“I'll never forget what you've done for me, and for all the people we saved from eating those tainted products.”

  “You are brave and strong.”

“I never would've known how strong I could be without you.”

“I'll always be there for you, every moment of every day, for the rest of our lives.”
