Can I draw your attention to a wonderful charity called The Cinnamon Trust? They recognise the special bond between owner and pet, and how precious that companionship can be in later years. Their national team of volunteers supports elderly owners by arranging walks if the owner becomes housebound, temporary fostering during hospital stays, and other practical forms of assistance to help keep old friends together. I think that’s kindness in action.

So if you love dogs (or cats or parakeets!) but can’t have your own, why not spend a little quality time with someone else’s? Volunteers are welcome all over the country – contact www.cinnamon.org.uk
