"Indeed I did," Angelica turned, "Grandfather, if you please."
Grandfather Willow bent forward slightly and when he straightened, he opened his arms wide and a small door appeared in his trunk. From inside Grandfather's trunk, Eric could see a yellowish light. It was bright, but not too bright that it was hard to look at.
Angelica explained, "This is what we call a gateway to Singing Stream. It leads to Dancing Tree Town and the outside world, where you live. We found Brown Bear lost between your people land and our towns. He also left this same way. I showed him how to find the outside world where you live, and off he went, sure that he would find his boy soon."
"Do you think I will find my bear if I go the same way, Angelica?" Eric was hopeful he might find Brown Bear through this gateway.
"I truly do not know if you will find what you seek. I cannot see beyond the door of our own land, or the land of Dancing Tree. I wish I could tell you more, but this is all the information I can give you."
As they all said goodbye, and Eric and Golden Bear set out through the gateway in search of Brown Bear, Angelica swept in close to give Eric something. It was a strand of yarn from Brown Bear's scarf. Angelica placed it in Eric's hand and kissed his forehead, wishing him luck on his journey forward. When Angelica kissed Eric, he felt a spark of energy run through him. It was like Eric could feel Brown Bear was right beside him on his quest to find him. Brown Bear was, after all, one of Eric's two best friends.
"You come back and visit us anytime you wish, Eric. All you have to do is listen for the Singing Stream, and your heart will lead the way." Angelica stood beside Toby and together they waved goodbye to their new friends.
Eric and Golden Bear waved back from the door of the gateway, and then disappeared through it. They were on their way, to where, they were unsure. At first, they could not see anything but light, but then they saw plenty of other things too. They passed some flowers and trees along their way. They heard birds and crickets. They saw butterflies and clouds. As they passed more and more things, everything became their proper sizes again. Slowly at first, but by the time they got to their own land, all was back to normal size once more.
The one thing they did not encounter was Brown Bear. They searched carefully as they passed between the Singing Stream, Dancing Tree, and their own island, but there was no sign of Eric's cherished bear.
Eric and Golden Bear knew they were back in their own land when they spotted the shoreline that ran along the entire island. There were familiar shells and birds singing. Coconut trees and glittering sand. They weren’t sure where they were exactly, however. They could be on the other side of the island altogether. Eric pulled his compass from his pocket. Eric always took the compass with him on their adventures. They never knew when it would come in handy.
Eric found his direction and climbed on Golden Bear's back. Up, up, up they flew, and soon they found their favourite coconut tree. When Eric looked at the place where the floating lid was, the lid was no longer there. It looked just the same as the rest of the land around it now.
They flew down the same path they had taken many times and straight into Eric's bedroom window. Eric and Golden Bear were home just in time for dinner.
"Eric! Turn off the television and bring Golden Bear down for dinner please!" Eric's momma called to him from the kitchen.
Eric and Golden Bear were both quite hungry after such an amazing adventure. Once dinner was done, Eric began to feel sleepy and decided to go to bed early. Of course Golden Bear went to bed too. Once he settled in bed, his daddy read Eric a story about a little boy who loved to explore. Thinking about how he and Golden Bear loved to explore made Eric smile a sleepy smile.
"Good night, Golden Bear," Eric said with a tired yawn to his loyal friend.
"Good night, young Eric. Don’t worry, we will not stop looking for Brown Bear. I promise."
"I know," Eric said sleepily, and closed his fist over the small strand of red yarn from Brown Bear's scarf.
