Chapter 14

For the sake of decency and decorum Jesse and Mina decided to wait a few months, until the new year rolled around, before they sealed their union. In those twelve weeks they got to know one another without yet sharing bed and table.

The more they learned about one another, the more they fell in love.

The men of the Black Thirteen soon figured out that they were no longer wanted or needed on the ranch. Mina paid them out and sent them on their way. They were eager to leave, too, because a new spirit now permeated the place. This was no longer their world.

On New Year's Day of 1868, Rev. MacFarlane married them in the church at Courage, and Wilhelmina "Mina" Morlock became Mina Bartleby. Everybody who saw them thought they were a wonderful couple.

In the course of that year, many of Jesse's men staked claims and became farmers. Others, Pierre Beauregard among them, kept on working at the ranch. Some settled in the town of Courage and opened stores.

Confidence and the belief that the future was bright filled the air as they all set out to accomplish their dreams. Whenever Mina thought of those months in later years, they seemed to her the best of her life.
