“That should do it.” Thomas tied the last rope on the tarp while Joseph attached the WIDE LOAD sign to the back.
Dad looked over at the huge excavation in the bottom of the pit, “I think we should fill in the hole before we leave because tomorrow is a holiday and there might be geode hunters and people on four wheelers all over here. We’ll come back early tomorrow with the other trailer to get the backhoe.”
Joseph found several whole geodes as they filled in the large hole, several of them the size of basketballs, but as he looked toward the trailer and the figure of the giant under the tarp, they just weren’t as exciting as they seemed the day before.
They had to drive very slowly over the rough terrain until they got back to the gravel road. They stopped to tighten the straps.
“Look at that sunset,” Joseph marveled. They stood there, looking back the way they had come as the sun settled behind the mountains.
Dad put his arm around the shoulders of the boy. “What a vacation, Huh?”
“The best,” replied Joseph.
