  Prologue

“Your darkness,” a voice said quietly. Jane looked up. “What is it?” she replied impatiently. “The arrangement is complete. The transfer is almost ready,” the voice carried closer towards the immobile girl with the name of Jane. “Zero,” the girl mocked with competent. The owner of the voice stepped out of the shadows. He was cloaked with a black cape, a hood covering his features, leaving his face sightless. “It is almost ready,” Zero repeated softly. Jane curled her lips into a menacingly twisted smile. “Wonderful,” she purred, her blood-red eyes gleamed as her sharp snails slit open the envelope that was previously sitting on her desk. “We attack in two months. In the meanwhile, keep the spars going. It will weaken them. By the time the final battle begins,” Jane’s eyes narrowed, her thin smile turning into a full-out sneer, “they’ll already be dead.”

  Chapter1

It was a bright, sunny day. Great weather for the start of a new school semester. Or so it seemed. I squinted towards the sun, using one hand in an effort to block out the scorching heat against my eyes. There was a rustling of leaves. I froze, blood rushing to my head as I glanced around warily. A loud snarling sounded beside me. I spun around quickly, backing away slowly. The creatures leapt at me swiftly, bloodshot eyes hungry, tongues rolling with poison saliva dripping out … they were practically drooling for my flesh and bones. I looked around wildly for a weapon, spotting a long, sharp branch that had fallen from a tree, looking jagged enough to prick someone’s eye out. I lunged for it, the same moment the beasts hurdled towards me, venom flying everywhere as I struggled to evade them … Suddenly, the world turned cold, the clouds moving over the sun, wind picking up, whipping my hair around me as I shivered. I was knocked off my feet, the branch a meter away from me. I started to crawl desperately, may path blocked by the fiends. “Please,” I whimpered. For a moment, I thought they’d back off – They lunged for me. I screamed. Darkness enfolded me, dread creeping over my body, my mind filled with agony…

  Chapter2

“Misaki. Misaki! Wake up!” I woke; bolting up so quickly that my room seemed to tilt. I groaned, sweat pouring down my face. I gripped my bed sheets tightly, shivering despite the hot summer breeze blowing from the open window. “Misaki,” said a voice from beside me. I jumped, glancing around cautiously, my eyes finally resting on the boy of 16, cap pulled over his eyes, hands crossed and a bored expression plastered on his face. “Kaito,” I sighed in relief, rubbing my temples tiredly. “Were you trying to murder your bed sheets?” he raised an eyebrow. I looked down at my lap, my hands still in the process of strangling my poor covers. Before I could answer, however, Kaito stood up. “Breakfast’s ready,” he said abruptly, marching from my room, pulling his Fila cap lower. I stared after him, momentarily surprised. Kaito was arrogant and self-centered, but he had a sweet side too. He simply disliked showing it. I gathered my throttled bed sheets and threw them off, swinging my legs off the bed. I turned on the shower and started to get ready for … school. I suppose this is the part where I’m supposed to introduce myself. I bet you were expecting something along the lines of, “hi my name is Misaki. My life is complicated so now I’m going to tell you about it and waste your time ‘cause I have nothing else better to do,” um, well, sorry to break it to you, but no. I hate sentimental, gushy speeches, so I’m gonna hand it to you nice and clean. My name is Misaki (yeah, like I said 5 times already). I’m a sorceress (well what’d you expect? Superman? Ha-ha, no.) I’m the leader of the Resistance. Kaito is my deputy. We fight the forces of “evil” (No, duh. Who else would we fight? Super humans from the planet Krypton?) Some crazy old woman’s trying to rule the earth (why does EVERYONE want to do that these days? Get a life, people) what? Not enough information? Okay. I’ll give you the long version then, with tons of big language words. 16 years ago, a dark witch named Jane tried to annihilate all human kind and enslave all magic users. My mother, the only hope in saving us all, used her power to seal her; perishing in the process. But now Jane’s back, more livid and wicked than ever, out for vengeance. That’s where I come in. I learned that I’d inherited my mother’s magic skills. I travelled and found opposition everywhere. I gathered them together to form my own army to fight against Jane and her minions from destroying our world. I met Kaito a few years ago. He had a remarkably colossal amount of power, close to my own. And so he became second-in-command. We grew together, all of us did. Helping each other out (Kaito in his own subtle way) and battled against Jane’s numerous attempts to cause chaos. Done. Oh no, wait. Hmm … oops I forgot something. Keep reading. The Resistance has settled down for the moment. Kaito and I decided to take precautions. We don’t want to raise curiosity, so we resolved to try and be “normal” kids. We were to attend Cross Academy. It’s only been a few weeks, but immediately, I was labeled “most desired girl” and Kaito the “hottest senior.” Stupid, right? (What, do we have signs hanging down our backs saying “Hi! Come and get us!”? Maybe it’s because of my glossy reddish-black hair? I think I’m going to cut them off. It’s getting too long anyway. I hate tying it up). Apparently, many places all over the world are still not aware of Jane’s raging destruction. “Freak storms,” Jake called it. HA! I wish. Then we wouldn’t need all this endless fighting and bloodshed. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s backtrack a bit. Yup, there we go. Oh no, just ignore me. Go on. My story is one worth reading. “That took forever,” Kaito commented as I stepped out from our HQ. He was leaning against the wall but straightened when he spotted me. “I know, but I wanted an analysis of yesterday’s incident,” I ran one hand through my hair, loosening the knots as I pulled it into a ponytail. “More like deliberate killing,” he muttered darkly as he handed me my bag. I slung it over one shoulder, smiling slightly. “Oh yeah. Kaito?” I called. He turned around. “Be on your guard because Alice predicted there might be an attack soon,” I warned. “At Cross Academy?” Kaito asked, surprise registering on his face briefly. “Yeah.” Alice isn’t completely sure when though. Seems Jane is still conflicting in that decision. Be on alert just in case,” I ordered. He jerked his head in agreement, twisting back towards the road as we neared the school. Alice was part of the Resistance, of course, and was gifted in foresight. The future can change because of one’s verdict or resolution, however, which makes it hard to really be sure of someone’s next motive. Alice needs to keep tabs on Jane. Who knows what kind of mischief that ugly weird witch is up to? Wait! Just to be clear, Jane drank an eternal potion (which she stole from my dead mother’s office, by the way) when she revived herself, making her young forever (I bet a lot of old people wanna get their hands on that). She’s supposed to be nine thousand and five or something.
