When Blue Jay and Bean arrived at base camp, preparations for departure were already underway. The three vehicles were ready to move out and the last of the gear was being loaded.
“Would rather do this at night, but I don’t think we have that option. Let’s load up,” Blue Jay ordered. “Bean, get on the radio and update JC on the situation.”
In case someone had come across their trail when they crossed the border, the Team took a different return route to Oman.
As the three vehicles traveled across the desert, everyone was very alert and kept watch, especially when passing sand dunes.
“May have sun glare in the air at about two o’clock,” Tic alerted everyone over the com.
Benz and Panda quickly turned their attention to that area and scanned for any type of aircraft.
“Two gun ships,” Panda reported.
“Let’s see what’s on their minds,” Blue Jay informed everyone, as he kept the convoy at the same speed and at the same time, guiding it toward a large dune not far away.
“They’re getting close enough for rockets,” Tic informed everyone then alerted, “the lead ship just fired.”
Now warned about the rockets being fired, the three vehicles took separate evasive actions with the dune being everyone’s destination.
Blue Jay took a straight line for the dune. The vehicle was coming to a sliding stop behind the dune when Bean jumped out and started digging under a tarp in the back. Check was the next to arrive and Benz was doing the same as Bean.
Air Jockey had turned off to the left when the convoy broke up, meaning he had to travel a longer distance to get behind the dune and the two gun ships saw him as easy prey, as they took turns with their rocket attacks. After some really creative driving to avoid rockets, Jockey finally managed to get behind the dune with the gun ships in hot pursuit. Both gun ships felt very confident of easy kills and pressed the attack, but were caught by surprise when they saw two men standing with what looked like shoulder held anti-aircraft missiles.
Bean and Benz waited until the last second before locking on, and then fired the red eye missiles at the two gun ships. The ships tried to take evasive action, but it was too late, as both missiles found their marks and the gun ships exploded in midair.
Knowing the downed gun ships must have reported seeing them, Blue Jay ordered everyone to mount up and the convoy resumed their journey toward Oman and the C-130 that would be waiting.
After traveling a short distance, Panda inquired, “So, Jockey, why again did we have to take the long route and get shot at more times than we could count?”
“Hey, somebody had to. Besides, it was a challenge,”
Air Jockey added, knowing he had just put a mini-Bull Shit Derby into the starting gate.
“Besides, it was a challenge,” Panda repeated the last part of his answer. “Well, putting your nose up somebody’s butt and fighting for air is a challenge too, but I don’t usually do it.”
“I’m not so sure about that. You look the type and I’ll bet it’s a tight fit with a honker like that,” Jockey replied, as he reached over and pinched Panda’s nose.
“So that’s the way it’s going to be,” Panda announced with a big smile on his face.
Needless to say, the third vehicle was not a peaceful ride and Blue Jay had to tell them three times to hold down the noise during the trip back to Oman.
