“Scarcely,” Greg said, and gravely shook hands with Cary Grant.

Agnes leaned forward to whisper, “We come here so he won’t be pestered by autograph seekers.”

  “I understand,” Greg said.

They exchanged a few pleasantries and, after declining an invitation to join them, Greg took his leave.

Rising again into the air, he drifted southward along the lake until he reached the Near North Side. At Armando’s, he descended to within a few yards of the street and followed a familiar path down Dearborn to Ginny’s apartment.

Her living room lights were on, and, hovering outside, he watched her laboriously sifting papers at one of her drafting tables. It soon became apparent that Ginny was in the middle of one of those frustrating work-dreams in which nothing ever gets done or stays done. She would pick up a galley and be unable to lay her hands on the type ruler she needed to measure it with; finding that, the galley would be misplaced. Getting both together at last, no pencil would be at hand to mark the galley. Having at last marked the galley, the scissors would be missing. The scissors found and the galley cut, the layout sheet she was working on would have gone astray.

Finally Greg glided through the window. Still absorbed in her hopeless task, she didn’t notice him until he went to her and laid a hand on her arm.

  She looked up, startled.

“Oh, Greg,” she said, her face a picture of desolation, “I just can’t make any of it come out right!”

He took her in his arms and brushed away her tears. “It’s all right, love,” he said. “It’s all going to come out right now.”

Although it was dark night in the realm of dreams, the sun was peeping over the eastern shore of the lake, and in his apartment on Lake Shore Drive the sleeping Greg Donner rolled over and smiled.
