“Yeah, I’m alright. I’ll take time to get over all of the weird stuff that’s happened in the last few months but I think I’ll manage.” She glanced at the news and then back at him. “So what about you, what are you doing next?”

Alex frowned. “What do you mean?” he asked.

Hayley shrugged. “I just meant you know...Gabriel’s gone and all that...” she shrugged again. “I just figured that you no longer had a reason to stick around...”

Shocked by her words, Alex sat down on the bed next to her. “You still think I’m going to leave you again, don’t you?”

“How do I know you won’t? Last time you just took off without even saying goodbye. What if something else comes along again and you have to go, then what?”

“It’s never going to happen, I’ll always be around this time.” He assured her, taking her hand.

“How can you say that for sure?”

Alex leaned toward her, his smile broadening. “Trust me.”

Hayley stared at him for the longest time. Then, after a while she smiled. “I do.”

Alex beamed even more brightly. “Good.” He said, leaning forward and kissing her gently on the forehead. Standing up, he turned to her, wings extending. “Get up, were going out.”

  “Where?”

Alex turned round so his back faced her and crouched down. Pulling the journal from his pocket, he discarded it uncaringly onto the bedside table. He glanced at her over his shoulder. “Somewhere, anywhere!” he shrugged. “Let’s just go out and have some fun for once.” He laughed, his wings arching downward.

Hayley clambered onto his back, wrapping her arms round his neck as he rose at an angle to support her weight. “Argh! You weigh a tonne!” he joked, pretending to let his legs buckle beneath him for a second or two as he proceeded toward the window.

He was punished by a swift kick to the ribs. “Shut up you!” Hayley laughed.

Alex couldn’t help but chuckle himself.

Throwing open the curtains and opening the windows that led out onto the balcony, Alex stepped out into the chilly morning air. For a moment he lingered, surveying the blue and pink washed skyline. A smile crossing his face, his long ivory feathers extended to their full potential.

“Hold on!” he shouted manically and in one furious flap they were up and away.
