PARTMENT NIGHT

Andrew is sitting at his desk, the room lit by a desk lamp. His is facing his computer monitor, typing on the keyboard.

  Fade out from Andrew.

EXT. BEACH AT BALBOA STREET AND GREAT HIGHWAY, SAN FRANCISCO AFTERNOON

Fade in to distance shot of Kieran sitting on beach, facing the ocean. Tom, Kieran’s friend walks up from the street and stands next to Kieran.

  TOM

Thought I might find you here.

Kieran turns his head slightly to acknowledge Tom’s arrival, then turns it back to face the ocean.

  KIERAN

I didn’t realize anyone was looking for me.

  TOM

I tried calling you several times. Went by your apartment, but figured you must be out here.

Tom sits down next to Kieran, facing the ocean.

TOM (CONT'D) Your lucky to live just a block away from this spot.

  KIERAN

Yeah. Not feeling really lucky right now.

Tom turns his head to look at Kieran.

  TOM

What’s up with you? You’re a successful entrepreneur, worth millions of dollars. You have a house that looks out over this beautiful beach. And you’ve convinced a hot young actress to act as matchmaker for you.

  TOM (CONT'D)

And yet, you’re sitting here in some kind of funk.

  KIERAN

  It’s not that simple.

  TOM

From my point of view, it certainly shouldn’t be this depressing.

  KIERAN

You’re right, it shouldn’t. But it’s not what I wanted.

Kieran gets up and begins to walk parallel to the water. Tom gets up and walks with him.

  TOM

  What do you mean?

  KIERAN

Liz is what I wanted. Or, rather, WHO I wanted.

Tom stops. After a few more steps, Kieran stops and turns to face Tom.

  TOM

Hang on a minute. You created this plan to have an attractive young actress find you your soulmate just so you could hook up with that same young actress?

Kieran turns his look to the ocean.

  KIERAN

When you say it like that, it sounds kind of silly.

  TOM You think?

  Tom steps closer to Kieran.

  TOM (CONT'D)

Why didn’t you just ask her out?

  KIERAN

I’m forty years old, fifteen years her senior. She would have turned me down before I finished asking.

Kieran turns and starts walking again. Tom catches up and walks with him.

  TOM

And how was this plan of yours supposed to end with a different result?

  KIERAN

It was supposed to end with her falling in love with me. As she got to know me, Liz would become more attracted to me and more jealous of the women she arranged for me to meet.

  TOM

And that didn’t happen, he asks sarcastically?

Kieran walks a few steps and stops. Tom stops next to him.

  KIERAN

Liz said she couldn’t do it anymore. She was becoming too emotionally involved, and was obviously unsuccessful at finding my soulmate.

  TOM

Your kidding me, right? Isn’t that what you wanted?

Kieran stands still, looking at Tom but not speaking.

TOM (CONT'D) Oh. I get it. Now that Liz is interested in you, you’re afraid to tell her you manipulated her into it.

Tom walks a few steps and turns to face Kieran.

  TOM (CONT'D)

You are an idiot. Oh my god. You created this elaborate plan and successfully screwed yourself in the process.

  KIERAN

Glad I can count on my best friend for sympathy.

Kieran turns and begins to walk back in the opposite direction. Tom stands for a moment, and then catches up with Kieran.

  TOM

You are really hooked on her, aren’t you?

  KIERAN

I want to be with her so much. I’ve never wanted anything else more.

  TOM

What are you going to do now?

  KIERAN

I don’t know. But if I get the chance again, I won’t let her go.

  Fade out from beach.
