  Author’s Note:

I wrote this story for my own sanity and for my sister and every teenage girl out there. Puberty, boys, and life in general, is tough but worth it. I hope to give girls more self-esteem by giving them a chance to become Holidee. She is just an ordinary girl with lots of compassion and love, and even when she wants to give up, she doesn’t. I have so many people to thank for the production of this book, but if I named everyone, it would be longer than the book itself.

I want to first thank God, my creator and savior. Without you, I would have never have been. You created life, which inspires me everyday. I am in awe every minute I look around at my surroundings and see your fingerprints. You are an awesome God. I love you.

To my father, Greg, for keeping me down to earth in times when my feet wanted to leave the ground. For showing me patience like no other. I may be your heart, daddy, but you are also mine. I love you, and I can still beat you in wrestling.

To my mother, Holly, for showing me true love. You showed me how hard work can pay off and how chick flicks can sometimes be fun to watch. Thank you for not letting me slack off or give up. You pushed me and I would not be the woman I am today without you. I love you.

To my brother, Josh, for giving me inspiration to write and imagination to live. You taught me how entrancing books can be. You taught me how wonderful words can be. You taught me how strong people can be. You have always been there for me. I only hope that someday I can repay you.

To my sister, Mikayla, for keeping me young and playing pirates with me. Through all of the arguments in our room, through all of the emotion, you showed me how love between sisters is stronger than any other.

To Katie, my “editor” and best friend. Without you, I could have never have gotten through school or life. You let me pour all of my ideas, thoughts, and emotions into you like a journal. Thank you.

To Christel, my godmother, who, even over the miles, kept in touch with me and made me feel as though I had a second mother and guardian angel watching out for me. I love you.

To so many of my teachers, with whom I owe my education. You taught me so much. You opened so many doors for me. I will never know when to stop thanking you. You taught me that education is not just something that is a must in order to live in this world, but a new light in a dim room, a freedom, a world away from the one we know. Mrs. Marcus, you pushed me to write and encouraged my creativity. Oh Captain, My Captain, Mrs. O’Dell, you taught me everything I needed to know to be a writer. Thank you.

To my friends. Life is so much simpler when you have someone else to lean on. Rachel, your beauty and talent touches me everyday. I have no doubt that your dreams will come true. You are intelligent, talented, and beautiful. Danielle, you are the living, breathing example of faith. Thank you for sharing it with me. To my South Korean roommate and long lost friend, Nahyun, you are so beautiful with a great sense of humor. Where have you been all my life?

To my family, for always being curious and supporting. Your encouragement kept me going.

To Virginia ‘Ginny’ Baker-Jackson, my grandmother, who filled me up with so much love that I had no choice but to give some to others. I will never get tired of your kisses.

To Margory Green, my grandmother, who taught me how to cook the best darn blueberry pie! Our long chats about life will always stay with me, as will all of the family stories.

To James T. Green, my grandfather, who never stopped pulling my leg. I will never forget your laughter, your twinkling eyes, or your faith. You are filled with so much life. Your faith has helped you through so much, that I have no doubt that you will live to be very old.

To Leonard ‘Bud’ Baker, my grandfather, who, I am told, loved me very much. I only wish that we could have had more time together. You are always in my thoughts. You are the mystery in my life every time I pass a picture of you. I will meet you again someday. Until then, though.

To any and everyone else. Thank you for being there for me.
