bottle, but the Alsatian’s owner stepped on the bottle and, after desperately waving his arms in the air and trying to stop his leg splaying for thirty seconds, landed in a heap and let go of the Alsatian’s lead.

Froggy ran around the block and then headed towards the theatre. The Alsatian was getting closer. Froggy turned a corner and saw the sign for the theatre. He yelled, ‘Squeak. Squeak. Open the delivery door!’

Squeak appeared at a window and leapt down. Froggy hurtled around to the back of the theatre. The Alsatian was inches away from him, his razor sharp teeth snapping at Froggy’s legs; his hot breath warming Froggy’s hind legs. The theatre’s delivery door raised 6 inches. Froggy slipped through the gap. The Alsatian tried to follow but only managed to get his nose under the door. It growled, ‘I’ll get you next time.’

Froggy gestured to Squeak who jumped on a button and the delivery door started to come down. The Alsatian pulled his nose out before it was crushed then stood barking and snarling at the door.

Moments later the dog’s owner could be heard shouting, ‘Come here you stupid dog!’

Squeak leapt down to Froggy and they high-five each other. Froggy said, ‘You need to look after Louise. She’s been through the wars.’

Squeak climbed onto Froggy’s back and touched Louise’s shoulder. ‘Wake up. We need to get you into bed.’

Louise slowly opened an eye. ‘Squeak.’ Then she shut her eyes.

Squeak said, ‘We need to get her to the den.’

  Froggy nodded.

A few minutes later Louise has been strapped to a small stretcher and hoisted up to the mice’s den. Squeak had cleaned her wounds and placed her on top of a pile of cotton buds then placed a piece of cloth on top of her. She slept soundly.

Squeak came down to the theatre floor and bounced across to Froggy. ‘Why don’t you stay here with us?’

‘I must go back. Generations of my family have worked for Mr Rae. It’s my duty.’

‘Do you think you’ll be able to find the way?’

‘I’ll get there. I’m sure the dogs will help.’

Froggy and Squeak shook paws. Then Squeak opened the delivery door and Froggy left. Squeak jumped up to the window and watched as Froggy disappeared into the distance.

A week later Froggy and Squeak meet in their usual place.

  Froggy asked, ‘How’s Louise?’

‘She’s doing well. Me and Rolo took it in turns to sit with her.’

  ‘Good.’

  ‘Did you get back OK?’

‘Yes. When I got there the biker and Mr Rae were both passed out. I chewed up a bit of old fur coat, so they thought I’d caught Louise.’

‘Good. Do you want to see Louise?’

  Froggy smiled and nodded.

Squeak gestured and Froggy, leant down and let Squeak climb onto his back. Then Squeak guided Froggy up to the loft of the theatre. They crept in and saw Louise, with a small red helmet riding around on a miniature motorcycle. Rolo was on the back of the motorcycle gripping on with all his strength, his eyes shut tight.

Squeak whispered to Froggy, ‘The motorcycle is a little electrical toy someone left in the theatre and the helmet was made out of a ping pong ball.’

As Louise made a circuit of the loft she waved at Froggy and Squeak, who both smiled and waved back at her.

Froggy whispered, ‘Is it good to be together again.’

  Squeak smiled.
