“That’s enough, Misha!” Miss Gretchen said, losing her usual cool. “I’m calling your parents right now. I can’t believe… The damage you could have caused…”
Miss Gretchen mumbled curses under her breath while she picked up the receiver of her phone. “Carine, Flynn—please, get back to dinner. You’re going to be one person short, so I’ll come help as soon as I can.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Yes, Miss Gretchen.”
The pair left the office and headed back to the kitchen. Once inside, Carine doubled over, kneeling on the floor.
“Carine, are you okay?” Flynn asked, immediately by her side.
“I… I think so,” she replied. She was trembling all over. “That’s not how I thought that was going to end. I was so scared. Can you imagine…? If Miss Gretchen had believed her… If my secret got out…”
“But she didn’t believe her,” Flynn comforted her. “And your secret won’t get out. Your secret’s safe with me, Carine. Forever. You’re safe with me.”
Flynn rubbed her shoulders and caressed her hair until she felt better. He helped her to her feet, and wrapped her in a warm hug.
“Who else knows?” He asked gently.
“My best friend, but she won’t tell,” Carine replied, and she knew in her heart that it was true. Her best friend would never betray her.
“Then everything’s okay,” Flynn said, looking into her face, giving her a warm smile. “Nobody else will ever know.”
Carine smiled. She did feel safe with him. She would just have to be more careful about how and when she used her powers.
Flynn leaned in to kiss her, giving her a quick peck on the lips. “Oops, I forgot. We have to save that for when we leave.”
They both laughed. Carine stepped over to the stove to continue making the dinner for Warmth of Winter, knowing that she herself had found some warmth of her own.
