Page 17 of Children Of Fate

Joel joined in on the applause and let out a whistle with two fingers hooked into his mouth. “And no one would ever know that the trophy has got a one hundred and ten million year old bit of metal stuck to it, and probably worth about that much too.”

Together they all laughed and applauded.

As the applause continued Nadia quickly slipped her hand into the trophy cabinet and left a reminder beside the trophy. It was a photo of the five taken in front of the rocky formation that was to be the opening to the chamber that held the disk. Across the top of the photo written in red was their team name that will hold true for ever, Friends.

After the assembly was over the Principal held the five up as the rest of the students returned back to their classes. The Principal once again thanked them for winning the school grant, the way they worked as a team to achieve their goal, winning the grant and respectful reputation they gained over the other schools and winning the grant of.

“Having the support and confidence of our school and yourself behind us gave us the edge we needed, “Joel said, tongue in cheek.

“And the perfect timing of the Education department assessing our school in the same week, or did you call them?” Alicia winked then led the others out of the gym.

The Principal watched them leave stunned, her mouth open and eyes unblinking.

Tony, Alicia and Roy returned to their respected classes. Nadia grabbed Tony’s hand and led him around the main building to the shelter of a giant Gum tree. The tree shielded them from the bright light and curious eyes under its protective grey shadow like a bird roosting its young.

Nadia stepped up onto her tippy-toes and ran her soft palm down Tony’s cheek, “I never formally got to thank you,” she giggled. “For watching over me.”

“Well, that’s the kind of great, incredible, chivalric guy I am. Especially…”

  “Especially what?”

  “Especially when you’re my girl.”

Nadia smiled from the inside out. She stretched her neck, Tony lowered his and they kissed.

“Ooh, Tony my boyfriend,” Nadia laughed again.

Tony had to look down at his feet to make sure they were still touching the ground. “WOW!” I can get use to that, girlfriend Nadia.”

  Epilogue

Alicia shook her head at the television as she sat with her family watching the six o’clock news. The world does not need to be like this, the thought almost brought a tear to her blue eyes. She watched on more and saw that each segment all finished up with a reporter asking a minister or a political leader for answers why. Answers that they could not find but skate around the true issue saying just enough to sound concerned but not too much as to scare or offend anyone; not even the perpetrators of the crimes. It was at that moment that you could say is when Alicia’s political career began with a promise to herself that she would find the answers.

Over time Roy’s sketch of the circle within a circle revealed its meaning. First it was when he was staring at the mercury in his dad’s wall thermometer, it seemed right and somehow fitting.

Second it was when randomly searching the net he came across the Electro Magnetic motor boat. A motor that has no moving parts instead propels the boat by creating an electromagnetic tube that shoots salt water out behind it like the way a squid travels through the water. He even made his own working model that earned him full marks on his physics project.

The third and final catalyst was one Saturday night he stayed up late watching old B grade movies from the fifty’s. On the screen in black and white was a very bad special effect of a UFO. The middle of the flying saucer spun around in one direction while the top and bottom spun slower in the opposite direction. It all clicked into place, “THAT’S IT!” he shouted at the T.V. and shooting out of his chair scattering chip everywhere.

The liquid metal would spin around a powerful electromagnet like the salt water does on the model of the boat he made. The liquid metal being much more conductive then the particles in the salt water would have a much higher rate of rotation and creating a electromagnetic field that could counteract the force of gravity with Ion lift. Simply it would hover in mid air.

The craft would not even have to propel through the air to travel but just latch on to a gravitational wave from the earth and ride with as it rotated. And being encased in its own gravitational bubble would also mean that it would be protected from outside air pressure and not be subject to forces as sound barriers. With a mild shift in any direction of ions passing through the craft would instantly propel it in the opposite direction.

“Well it’s a start,” Roy said and began building his experimental model.

One night Joel could not sleep. Something did not sit right. Nadia had shared recent stories at school of her visions she saw of the past; Roman, medieval and of renaissance eras. The words Richard said to him that day they parted echoed loudly around his head, “The disk cannot predict the future,” Richard had said.

  Cannot predict?

Thoughts ran through Joel’s head how could he have known the way of the Romans and Egyptians if he made the disks one hundred and ten million years ago. The way the Aztecs painted images of surgical procedures on rocks, if it could not predict the future.

Then it hit him, by luck or was it the beginning of the disk’s influence.

He shot up in his bed at night and yelled, “he walks with us through time.”

He’s dad’s voice answered back through the dark night-time house, “Joel shut up will ya or I’ll walk you out the front door.” His voice dropped back down to a mumble. “First lighthouses and now time walkers, watching too many video shows and game thingys…”

Inside Joel’s mind the pieces began to fall into place. The maker built and hid the disk all those years ago but sacrificed his whole existence, bodily and soul. He had put part of his soul into each disk entrusting his life into the ones he loved most, us. All the knowledge obtained in this world is born from this ancient stranger. We are his creation, decedents molded in his form, his one and final weapon.

The disk needed to be shut off and his soul killed so the next part of him could awaken. We didn’t just receive a stored telepathic message as Richard said, we absorbed a part of him. He lives on inside us. He is Fate. He has all along guided humanity through the ages. He didn’t predict the future he made it even to the extent of designing a city so long ago and made it come true working through Colonel William Light designing Adelaide the way he did. He always intended to build it a hundred and ten kilometers away to the south but something persuaded him to build it where it stands now. To make the clue fit the map.

With each time the disks were used he lost a part of him and when the last disk is opened his sacrifice would be complete and then we would be in possession of that one great secret. He would have to die to lead us to a point in time where we would have the knowledge and power to stop this unknown evil corroding our universe. An evil whether we like it or not will return and destroy everything the maker stood for and built and claim that one final all powerful secret.

That is why we humans have stayed a warring race for all this time. He could have guided us to peace just like the Great Race had achieved but we would have fallen the same way and it would have all been for nothing. We had to stay corrupt, greedy and hateful, he adopted protectors so it would not grow out of control. It is this balance of love and hate that will hopefully help save us all.

The picture Alicia drew was a picture of the final battle ground.

  The Earth.

  We are his weapon.

We are his one last desperate stand.

  THE END.
