Chapter 5
It was Friday and the time was 9:30 Am. Victoria rolled around in bed and grumbled as she looked at her alarm clock. She didn’t really want to get up, but she knew she had to. Recently Victoria had gotten fired on Tuesday and she had been doing anything in her best interest to find a new employer. She called a few potential employers back about potential job offers and set up interviews with jobs that were hiring. She really needed a job more than anything. Rent was due again soon and she really didn’t want to have to borrow off friends and family. Her last paycheck would be a decent size, but not enough to live on from one job to the next. She was extremely skilled at working as an assistant or lead project developer. It was rather disheartening to see someone with so much potential not be employed. She needed a job where she would be respected though. She called up quite a few places on Wednesday and one of the places who offered her a walk in interview was SolNova. It was up her alley because it was a company dealing with clean and sustainable energy. She had another potential interview though with a company called Liquid Innovations. The name kind of bugged her because liquid and electronics don’t mix.
Victoria went to her walk in interview at SolNova and the boss really liked her. He said that he had recently lost his assistant due to competition and would be eager to start her next week. Victoria was flattered but she had to decline with the intent of coming back after having the other interviews. Her next stop was Liquid Innovations to see what that company was all about. When she had got there though the place looked different than what she assumed. This place looked more like a medical lab or some place a mad scientist worked. She was greeted warmly by a young guy named Benjamin. Surely this had to be a fake name or the guy was just an intern. He looked like he was only young enough to intern here, not work as an assistant to the CEO. Victoria waited patiently in the lobby with an uneasy feeling. There was an ominous presence about this place that she couldn’t explain. She was able to figure out what that feeling was when she saw her mystery man again.
“Please to meet you my name is Ryan O’Connell. You must be Victoria.” Ryan said fondly. “Nice to finally meet you. I have seen you around town a lot” said Victoria. “I do try to make an effort to go out into the community whatever chance I get. I like to spread the word of my company and meet new people” Ryan said. As they talked Victoria was more and more intrigued about what the company actually did and Ryan was trying to maintain his composure. Ryan sniffed the air as he smelt a faint smell of roses and vanilla. He had to entice her to want to work here or charm her to keep talking to him. That was the only way he was going to get to know her further.
“Victoria, what is it that you think we do here?” Ryan said. If I had to guess it must be something to do with anti-aging” Victoria said. Only five minutes here and she has already figured things out just by the magazines, wall hangings, and brochures. That’s more than impressive, that’s astounding. “That’s right. We believe that age has no time clock except death itself. No one knows when we’re going to die, but we don’t have to look old either” Ryan said. Victoria was impressed, but what he offered that was different than other snake oil companies promising empty dreams. “We offer the promise that you will lead a healthy and prosperous life. We have many different products in different markets that promote healthy living for the average person. We market to those who are trying to stop or reverse the clock. We have a healthy foods line, electronics, smartphone apps, and a wide variety of other stuff. We are the new age innovators of the fountain of youth. Within the next year our company alone will be worth 3 billion dollars. I think from what I have read about you and from your references you would be a great asset to my company” said Ryan. He couldn’t help but keep looking at her and he knew exactly who she was. She was the woman he had been following around for a while now. He had been following her as a bat and inconspicuously bumping into her in other random places too. He knew where she was going to be way before the fact. He could read minds and he invaded her dreams ever so quietly. She knew that there was something strange about him, but she needed a job so she decided to accept the job without hesitation. She asked when she would start the job and he told her he needed her as soon as possible. She decided the best time to start was Monday or Tuesday. He told her that Tuesday would be good so she could have a three day weekend. She was ever so grateful and she thanked him.
As she left she had a weird uneasy feeling, almost like the feeling you feel when you experience Déjà vu. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt like she had known Ryan for years. She just wished she knew where she had known him. As she left his office she didn’t realize she had a white bat flying over top of her from tree top to tree top. It wasn’t Ryan because he was still in the building. It was Rosella and she was following Victoria. Rosella thought that the lady that she was following was someone from her past that she knew, one of Ryan’s past loves. She was extremely jealous that Ryan would allow any woman to get close to him. She had wanted to be with Ryan since she had met him and it would be the last thing she did. She followed Victoria from tree to tree maintaining anonymity and keeping out of direct sunlight.
When Rosella reached somewhere where she could shape shift unseen she turned herself from a bat to a human form. She would catch up to this female if it was the last thing she did. She had an idea of who it might be. Ryan dated a woman named Margareta. She came in contact with her several times and they didn’t get along. Rosella shouted loudly and aggressively “Hey Margareta fancy seeing you here you whore”. Victoria turned around quickly and was unsure who the mad woman was talking to. My name is not Margareta. That was my great grandma’s name though. My name is Victoria and who are you?” Victoria said. “It doesn’t matter who I am. Just know that Ryan is off limits” Rosella said. “I don’t know how you know any of my family or honestly how old you are. Ryan has no ring on his finger so I will not leave him alone” said Victoria. “Ok honey well then you and I will have problems. Just remember that if I see you messing with him I’m not responsible for what might happen” Rosella said. “Well he just hired me to work for him so it’s going to be kind of hard not to be around him. So be jealous all you want honey. Take that raggedy ass of yours back home” Victoria said. With that Victoria walked home confident as ever because she knew that for once she had stood up for herself. But, what consequences would that bring exactly? She didn’t know just yet but she would soon find out.
Chapter 6
It was Monday night, it was cold and damp and the moon was full. It was a nice night for a jog and Sarah Anderson decided to take a jog through the park. As she jogged she felt a sudden chill through the air. She didn’t realize how chilly it was for a spring night. It was 45 degrees Fahrenheit and she forgot to bring a thin hoodie. As she jogged she started to warm up a bit, but she felt uneasy as she jogged. She felt like someone was following her. She didn’t realize that someone was following her, gracefully jumping tree to tree. It was Rosella and she was jumping tree to tree and would make a small whistle every now and then making it sound like the chirping of birds. With one jump she stirred up a group of birds in a tree and the all scattered through the sky. This scared Sarah and she stopped for a moment to get ready to run the other way. Rosella liked to scare her meal for the thrill of the chase, but not when the person was already athletic. She didn’t really like fast food. She swooped down and jumped in front of Sarah. This scared Sarah and she was not in any way happy to see her. She was boggled how Rosella even got there. “Please don’t kill me I’ll give you whatever you want. I have jewelry and money” said Sarah. “I do love some nice jewelry. I’m not going to kill you because I want to, I’m a vampire and I need to eat honey. No hard feelings” Rosella said. With that she bit into Sarah with one large bite and sucked a lot of blood from her until she felt satisfied and was no longer craving blood. She would not need to do this again for another month or more. In the meantime she could feed on animal blood.
Next she had to hide
or dispose of the body. She decided the best place to put it was not far from her new friend Victoria’s house. This would make her late for work because she would be either a suspect or witness and have to be questioned before going to work. This was going to be entertaining. This was going to look more like an animal attack or a grisly murder, but at least she would be detained a few hours and have to go to work late. Rosella had lots of plans to put Victoria through living hell.
