They sat down on the sand side by side, staring out at the water, comfortable in their silence. She liked that about Damion—the way they could sometimes just be together and they didn’t have to say anything.
Lara had done nothing but fall more in love with Damion and become more excited about her role in the Wardens. Not only was she helping to protect other women from the Zodius soldiers that abducted them, she understood what it was like to have your life change overnight, to have it stolen from you. She brought that to the women who used the Wardens to cope with their past, like she was using it for herself. Thanks to the medical records and some help from Jenna, who’d confessed to having a lot to repent, the Wardens had the former members of Serenity helping them as well. Of course, Powell had done what he did best—as she’d learned from the Renegades. He’d disappeared. She shoved away the thought, not wanting to think about when Powell might reappear.
Lying down in the sand, Lara stared at the sky. “What made you want to come here tonight?”
“This,” Damion said, setting something on her stomach.
Lara lifted her head and lost her breath. It was a ring box. She sat up and held the gift, and good gosh, her hand was shaking. “Damion?”
He moved so that he faced her, his legs in the opposite direction. “This is where you started a new life once before. I’m hoping you’ll decide to start a new one with me here as well.” He flipped the top of the box open, displaying a white-gold diamond band with the most spectacular stone she’d ever seen. She’d only just realized how much money he had from the family business, and how much he’d invested in the Renegades.
She blinked at him, stunned. “Damion, it’s… big, too big. I can’t wear something that cost this much.”
“Oh, I bet you can,” he said, smiling.
She glanced down at it. “It’s spectacular, it’s—” Why couldn’t she seem to form a coherent sentence?
“Not nearly as spectacular as you,” he said, his voice low, gravelly. “You didn’t get to choose how we Lifebonded, and you didn’t get to choose our blood bond.” His fingers settled on her cheek. “I love you more than I thought it was possible to love someone. I would be honored to call you my wife. So I’m asking you now to choose me, to choose us. And I thought… we could renovate the shelter and hire someone to run it after we get married. I was thinking we could say our vows right here on this beach.”
Her lips trembled, the emotion of this place, of what she felt for this man, overwhelming her. Tears streamed down her cheeks.
He wiped them away. “Please tell me those are happy tears.”
“Yes. I’m so very happy.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. “And this is one name change I’ll welcome.” She smiled. “I really do like the sound of Lara Browne.”
And so he made love to her, right there on the beach. Later, she took him home and tied him to their bed and made love to him.
